Canadians check in here....

When I first started looking for chickens, light sussex were the first breed I wanted. I couldn't find them. I was wondering where you did. Maybe someone on here might know someplace preferably in NB to find them. Hatching eggs would work too. Thanks.
You can get light sussex from Performance poultry. I haven't seen a single light sussex here. Lots of Speckled.

I got my Light Sussex from two sources - a lady in Langley (who raises hundreds and is working hard at improving the breed) and a lady in Vernon. Both in BC, but I've heard of some breeders further east as well.

I had trouble finding the breeds I wanted originally as well. I made a website yesterday to connect buyers to sellers. I think it would be really useful to help preserve heritage breeds and make connections between people. http://heritagechickens.weebly.com

Light Sussex in Vernon you say???
Does she sell hatching eggs? Is she on this site? Thanks for your time.

I got a light sussex chick - a gorgeous roo it turned out to be, from Greendale Heritage Farms in Chilliwack/Aggasiz area this year!

I have the chicken bug BAD. I need farmland, I hate living in R zoning! :( We missed the boat though - 5 years ago, we could have had a nice little hobby farm for $175,000 - now nothing is below $299,000 and it's not like our salaries have bumped up that exponentially!

I don't know if she's on this site. When I bought chickens from her I didn't know much about Light Sussex and was having a hard time tracking down sources of Light Sussex, now that I know more I would recommend you buy chickens from the lady in Langley and not in Vernon.

Or from me for that matter. And I may be getting Rhode Island Reds from a guy in Penticton in the spring (I saw on a different thread that you were looking for RIR's?).

That's surprising. The market is not good right now. Our house was worth so much more than what we got out of it. We sold our house for our dream farm. The closing date was Nov 21/2012. So it's pretty fresh. I still miss the house, but the zoning I do not miss!

Crazy how we are so controlled. It was a small village of 1,000 people and I couldn't own chickens, even though we were a block away from a cow farm.

We bought here really low - almost at the lowest and then there was a crazy housing boom here. Our neighbourhood didn't get the crazy inflated prices. I'm not sure why all of a sudden the acreage has gone up though, it's such a bummer now that we're ready! We could have actually traded up for almost the same price. I've been looking at real estate in your province for the past few years and been trying to convince my hubby to move there - never going to happen. I feel like an east coast girl at heart for some reason :) Probably watched too much Road to Avonlea as a kid!
