Canadians check in here....

I just wanted to give Canadians here a warning about a poultry business that was mentioned here. "DC Heritage Poultry". I just read on another forum about how they were busted for running a puppy mill last year. Over 500 dogs seized!!! They are repeat offenders & laws aren't strong enough to keep them out of engaging in these businesses! Now they're getting into poultry. Please, do not do business with these people! We must stop the abuse!

Absolutely gutted. We just got all of our chicks starting out new flock from DC HERITAGE about 4 weeks ago, and by chance hubby just found a comment on Facebook, that led to a Google search that turned up this post. So disappointed and angry that this place is still involved in breeding and raising animals, and really devastated that I just funded their operation, however innocently :_;

Looking back at some comments from others now, they point out things I didn't think about as a complete beginner — complete lack of bio-security procedures, for example. She also seemed to have, to my eyes, an incredible amount of chicks... I assumed she was shipping a lot, but now I have many doubts about what is happening to the surplus chicks. Although the chicks and pullets I have seem to be in good health, and conditions were clean, although possibly a little crowded (again, my lack of experience plays against me here), I didn't see the barn where she got my rooster from :(

At least my chicks have a good home now, but we'll never buy from this family again :(

Hopefully my post will bump this topic up for this year so nobody else in Ontario or Québec gets caught out by these people.

Definitely take a look at DIY heated waterers for the winter! Super easy and cheap, and your ladies will love you for it! Congrats on your new flock!

Hey Canadians; I need your help!! I have one chicken with lice - apparently with all sorts of Government restrictions I can no longer buy Dry Kill or Sevin - or well anything. It seems if you are not a certified farmer you are unable to buy these things.
Any alternative ideas???

Would a dog flea powder work??

I have found DE dust that I will just leave in their coop now. Is there anything else I could be doing?? I want to deal with this before the nice weather comes and the lice start laying eggs!!

DE and Wood Ash (From your wood stove/fireplace) is supposed to be fantastic for dust bathing and keeping the mites and lice away.

Just ordered my first ever small flock of 8 barred rocks pullets. Very excited. Anybody have any specific advice for raising my flock in my northern ontario environment.?

Yeah, I totally agree with making or purchasing a heated waterer! (something kind of like this: http://www.mypetchicken.com/catalog/Feed-and-Water-Supplies/Heated-Pet-Bowl-p482.aspx) As well, making sure to have draft free ventilation in the winter is important to get the moisture (that the chickens produce) out of the coop. Also, putting up some sort of plastic wrap around the bottom of my run during the winter months really cut back on snow and wind!
Good luck!!!

thank you crazychicken for your reply. What sort of Draft free ventilation do you suggest. I have limited amount of power at the coop.

No problem at all! Well, if possible having ventilation high in the coop (near the roof), to keep from creating ventilation that could cause wind to blow across the chickens. I have a couple squares (1' by 1') cut into the ceiling of the coop that open into a gable which is covered by the roof (if that makes sense! See pictures below). Its very easy to think that when winter comes you need to make the coop as warm as possible by closing off everything, but that can lead to a very damp environment which could cause frostbite. It's nothing to be to worried about, just making sure to have a way for the air to continue to circulate. (also, where frostbite is concerned, if there is going to be a super cold night, covering the chickens combs in vaseline really helps! Or purchasing chickens that have small combs works too)

'Kay here are some pictures:
You can see a bit of the ventilation hole that I am talking about in the upper right corner of the picture!
And here is the gable that I am talking about!

Also, here is an article about ventilation, cause I don't consider myself an expert on ventilation--I may actually need to put some more 'holes in my coop'
