Candeling and hatching diary.

Today is Hatch Day (after 10am) and so far I've got 1 external pip from a Wyandote x EasterEgger rooster. When I candled on Day 18 before lockdown most eggs appeared to be developing a little slower than in the past, perhaps the new incubator runs a bit cooler than the one I had built before. It's either that or all the White Leghorn eggs are just lazy, knowing they will be making a ton of eggs in the not too distant future.

The Hovabator makes so much noise I can't tell if any birds have internally pipped and/or are going cheep-cheep. I also can't get the humidity much above 60% without water overflowing the tray channels and soaking the eggs.

Hoping for a successful hatch over the next 24-36 hours, will update!

Keep it at 60 that's ok, you want it about 60 to 65 so your OK...

So leghorn's are lazy, Ill have to remember that one. LOL

Well, it looks like the White Leghorns are starting to make a run for it against my hybrids, three have externally pipped in the last hour! No change in the first egg to pip, I'm sure the little guy is tuckered out and resting/absorbing. Hopefully a few more of my hybrids pip, they should be good looking birds.

See they aren't so lazy. LOL

I bet I am not the only one who loves having a very vocal hatcher bator on hatching day. Up to 8 chicks it has been a fight though I am sure it is do to the rough air cells but so far I have managed to save most of my malpositioned or at least the ones who did pip externally. How is everyone else doing? Anyone else participating in the Easter Hatch Along?

Nope, I lost two milles tonight, not sure how but they were sticky. I have two more still in there and they don't look very promising. Grrr. I need to watch my humidity a little closer..

Today is my first candling day of my goose and rouen set. All were shipped eggs.

This is the back side of goose egg 1 with best view of the marked air cell. The top line was marked the day they came in the mail, the second line was marked today during candling:

Front side of goose egg 1: "floater" refers to what the air cell was doing when it came in the mail. This egg still has a free floating air bubble, so it's still set upright in the incubator and I rock it gently back and fourth about 5 times a day by hand using towels to support it.

Goose egg 2, air cell is now fully intact and has smoothed its outline in this first week. No jiggling in the cell either!

Goose egg 3, air cell no longer moves and the air sac looks more "normal".

All three goose eggs are very orange inside, but I don't see any spidering veins. The warm colors compared to last week have me happy though- I assume it might still be hard to see much in a goose egg after week 1. Let me know if I'm wrong.

My rouen eggs *sigh*. All of the air cells seem to have stabilized in all of the eggs, but only two look like they're developing. Here's the photos.

Rouen egg 1, you can see the embryo hanging out by the outlined air cell which has me worried a bit. I've kept these upright all week in incubation while gently rocking them to turn.

This is rouen egg 6. I can see more inside because of the light my camera picked up, but otherwise to the eye this egg just looks very orange and warm.

This is egg 3 to give you an example of what all the other eggs in the group look like. All are very yellow and pretty clearish.

I'm going to keep them in the incubator just in case though. I marked all air cells which I see some evaporation in all. My set two has not started pipping yet and I still can't see anyone pipping internally. Everyone's still moving in their eggs though. I don't have the energy to worry about them today (as I have come down with a cold and I am sick). Lockdown was on Friday, so I'm still not going to stress. Maybe I should be stressing. Let me know if I should be.

Happy incubating and congrats on the hatches!

I just found photos of goose eggs at day 7, and it looks like you should be able to see something inside. Maybe the shells on these are thick, maybe my candler thingy stinks. Either way, not feeling good about much today.

WOW your ROUEN look good. Now I have never been successful with floaters, some people say they have ben able to get them to hatch but not here. I read to keep them in a cool place for 48 hours upright. Ive tried several methods and nothing seems to work for me. NOt sure what else the secret is, so if you get a deatched one to show signs of life, I WANT YOU STEP BY STEP INSTRUCITOns. LOL You can teach me something.. LOL

Top photo of this goose egg is day 1 set, bottom photo is after 1 week of incubation. I don't even know. Maybe they are the same. Maybe not. I don't even know what I'm even looking at. LOL
