Candeling and hatching diary.

Just set another 45 barnyard. Will see how the home made incubator works this time around after major tweaking from last year. I have a total of 91 eggs set to hatch by Easter if they all make it that far. Congrats on the hatches everyone and sorry for the mishaps.

OMG, THAT'S A CRAP LOAD OF EGGS. WHOOOLLLLLLYYY COW, YOU HAVE YOUR WORK CUT OUT FOR YOU..

I agree lol not sure what I am thinking but oh well It will either be a good thing or a lesson learned. I had some shipped eggs come in today very worried about there air cells as the box looked like it was crushed during transport but surprisingly only one broken egg. They are english orpington eggs so very excited about them.

I bet I am not the only one who loves having a very vocal hatcher bator on hatching day. Up to 8 chicks it has been a fight though I am sure it is do to the rough air cells but so far I have managed to save most of my malpositioned or at least the ones who did pip externally. How is everyone else doing? Anyone else participating in the Easter Hatch Along?

Today is Hatch Day (after 10am) and so far I've got 1 external pip from a Wyandote x EasterEgger rooster. When I candled on Day 18 before lockdown most eggs appeared to be developing a little slower than in the past, perhaps the new incubator runs a bit cooler than the one I had built before. It's either that or all the White Leghorn eggs are just lazy, knowing they will be making a ton of eggs in the not too distant future.

The Hovabator makes so much noise I can't tell if any birds have internally pipped and/or are going cheep-cheep. I also can't get the humidity much above 60% without water overflowing the tray channels and soaking the eggs.

Hoping for a successful hatch over the next 24-36 hours, will update!

So I ended up with 15 chicks out of 30 eggs that made it to lock down not great odds but I do believe the bad aircells were the reasonging I had 3 that were malpositioned (one is still not all the way hatched and then this hatcher did not maintain the humidity so I had shrink wrapped chicks. I hate having to be so hands on but the last 5 chicks would not have made it I had another chick that was super tiny and although it tried it died within 24 hours of hatching. I just put my quail eggs into lockdown today they are on day 15 I will let you know a count on them a little bit later. I also have about 120 eggs going into lockdown on Wed. They are mostly BYMs but there are also a couple of marans and some rodebars I am very excited about the rodebars were the only ones shipped and there air cells look good. Going this morning to pick up my final eggs for the Easter Hatchalong befor those eggs and the eggs I received in the mail today I was at 356 for the hatchalong so it looks like I could have well over 400 chicks hatching the day befor easter. 275 of those eggs are fir a friend who is refreshing his flock, the rest are purebreds lav. Orpingtons, Copper Marans, English Orpingtons, Rodebar, Silver and gold Wyandottes, Kansas blues, RIR, and I am sure I am missing some but we will see lol, Going to sit down today and make up my list of what exactly I have. Also goign to sepnd this gorgeous day building more chicken coops I am only a few weeks out from actually being able to start breeding my own pure bred flocks.

I hope every one else is doing well I know I already asked but who is setting for Easter?

Still on lockdown on set two here, everyone is doing good IN THEIR SHELLS! Lol! Happy babies, what I have candled carefully I've seen lots of movement on the edges- not one internal pip though. I expected this- I learned a lot from my first set so I'm just being patient. Set three is chugging along, no drama. I had a couple of quits when I candled that set on their day 7 but most everyone is looking good- lots of spiders!

My first real candling of my goose/rouen group is coming up very soon. I have snuck peeks at them here and there. I'm most happy with what I see in the goose eggs which is making me happy! I have a couple of the rouen eggs looking okay I think, but again another couple of days and some photo critique from the masters here and I'll know more.

Nice to see more updates!

Well, it looks like the White Leghorns are starting to make a run for it against my hybrids, three have externally pipped in the last hour! No change in the first egg to pip, I'm sure the little guy is tuckered out and resting/absorbing. Hopefully a few more of my hybrids pip, they should be good looking birds.

HERE THEY COME, OMG It will be like dominos!!!

This weekends hatch It was an assorted group but looks like mostly a variety of Bantam Cochins Also a couple LF EEs from some one else used a different incubator to hatch in this time did not like the results also all these eggs had detached aircells and one of them had a dented egg the resulting chick from it was very strong but I forgot which one it was lol.

Look what I scored today

1st
A nice Rabbit hutch or even a great grow out cage

And then a cage on wheels and from a yard sale the doo dad on top I see either a potential hatcher or just a transition cage for chicks just hatched still trying to get there feet under them. The cage on wheels has already been set up as a brooder and so far so good.

And finally just into lock down today
