Candeling and hatching diary.

I'll keep her out of the water. I sort of felt off doing it, I just wanted to make sure she was working properly if you know what I mean. She's working wonderfully. I appreciate your help greatly and encouragement.

Hatching chickens. So, I should leave them in the carton?

Chickens can hatch in the carton so I think that would be a preference of your choice. Me personally, I lay my down.

These are our silkie s there is still an egg in the incubator not piped but can still hear it so we are hanging on !

So my easter hatch is still on going had my first duckling hatch today unfortuantly I had to intervene it was a day over do and pipped the wrong end. It was ready to come out no blood but just unable to do so on its own it seems to be very tired as it is not real active but I gave it some sugar water and it perked up. I am also concerned about its legs seems to be a little splay legged trying to decide what to do for it. On a brighter note I have orpingtons hatching right now they are BBS and so far there has only bee one black and the rest all appear to be Splashes and Blues. Although I can not tell the blues apart from my lavenders that hatched yesterday and Friday. It has been a bitter sweet day for me as it is the first holiday sense my Foster Dad died I miss him so much.

I am not positive, but, I think I may have killed 12 babies.

Perhaps I do not know how to candle properly, or I am not seeing right, but, I see 12 air cells, veins in 9 eggs, but no signs of life. I am on day 14.

My eggs actually look like they have 2 air cells. Point end and round end. And very dark in the middle.

Should I have candled more frequently?

I have only candled twice.

The incubator has technically stayed steady in temps, and humidity, fluctuating between two and three degrees, and 5% humidity, but not for long.

My weighing and candling process has taken 20 minutes total.

Not sure where I went wrong in the process.

Home made turner. Turning twice a day am/pm. Incubator is in a safe location where the room temp stays about the same within 10 degrees, fairly gentle and quiet.

Wondering if I candle on lockdown, and toss em, or, like my friend says, keep em going. If no one hatches by day 23, start again?

Ahhhhh. I can't even stop crying right now.

Make sure he's on a wired bottom, that will help with his legs, when they first hatch they are very very weak in the legs and have to work on getting strength in them. you can also give him some Vitamin B complete just drop one pill in a quart of water. I doubt it that he has spraddle unless he is on something slippery and keeps slipping, Ive seen it many many times baby ducks with weak legs and usually it's not spraddle if you get him on the correct flooring.... If you have a towel or wash cloth that will also do the trick. he just needs to use those legs and build up muscle..

OK first of all what are you using for a candle? Second why only twice a day? You should be turning them Odd numbers a day. Three times is usually good. If they stay to long on one side they will stick to the shell and you might as well forget it.

But it does sound like you are not having that issue. If you were they would be clearer..

Never hear having air cell on both end. I don't think that's exactly what you are seeing. You probably see some empty space on the smaller end which is normal, Your baby is in a oval shape in the middle of the shell. As it gets closer to the day he will fill up the entire egg., you will not see anything or at least it will be very difficult to see anything.

Home made bators ARE the best in my opinion. Do you have a fan? What is the humidity and temp at right now>?


No need to keep opening the bator to candle. next candling should be three days before there due date..

Candle them before you lock them down, look for movements. Also you should slightly tilt them up when you lock them down make sure the larger end is higher then the smaller end. I usually stop turning mine four days before there due date. but in your case don't stop.
