Canker sores

Can anyone here advise on dosage please for the Acidified Copper Sulfate? The directions are for 256 gallons of water which doesn't help.
I have one chicken who I am currently treating for canker sores and wanted to try the copper sulfate.
I appreciate any direction re dosage.

Thanks!

The root killer you are looking at at Lowes is not the same as Acidified Copper Sulfate that is used for livestock - best wait for what you ordered.

The API Fungus Cure at Petsmart may be what you can use, but you will need to find the active ingredients to see what it contains. I see they don't mention that on the listing.

As @biophiliac mentions it is concerning that she is not drinking/eating. Staying hydrated is most important. Tubing or syringing fluid into her would be a good idea. Even though the canker is in the beak, without proper hydration and nutrition, it will be hard for her to recover. http://www.backyardchickens.com/t/805728/go-team-tube-feeding

Ideally if you can find this...it would be best.

Acidified Copper Sulfate is applied at the rate 1/4 tsp per gallon of water for 3 days. Make sure to use plastic or rubber water containers, no metal.

What else are you using to treat your chicken with?

Thanks for the reply and many thanks for the metal tip. Their water is in a stainless steel bowl and I would not have known this is not okay. What would happen?

So far I have been trying Thyme oil.

My original post is here:

I think there is a reaction between metal and the Acidified Copper Sulfate - there should be a warning on your package worded something like use only in non-metal containers.

I see. Is the Thyme Oil helping?
I would try the Acidified Copper Sulfate, but I'm not sure about using the Thyme oil along with it. I don't know enough about natural remedies to know if that would be contradictory.
If neither one makes a difference, it would be a good idea to take a sample like you posted and have it tested to see what it is.

To be honest, I'm a bit terrified of the Acidified Copper Sulfate. It arrived today and aside from being bright blue, it looks way too much like the chemicals that go into a swimming pool. The thought of that going down anyone's throat has caused me to pause on that for now.
It may be too early to say if the Thyme oil is helping. I'm inclined to say yes because today when applying it directly on the alleged canker, it didn't bleed. Normally when I impose a q-tip on there, it bleeds pretty bad. It didn't today.

Agreed re sample. Have to do some research on where to send it.

Do you have a picture of the label? This is the one I have seen for sale below. If it just says copper sulfate, that is the wrong type to use. The acidified copper sulfate is more for a preventative in spreading the canker. Dosage of 1/4 tsp per gallon for 3 days a month. Canker can be treated with an antiprotozoal medication—Fish Zole—metronidazole— given 250 mg daily for 5-6 days.

You are in California correct :)
I think UC Davis has several labs in CA that will accept samples, give them a call to find out how. https://cahfs.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/

There's also independent labs like Zoologix that will accept certain samples, so you might want to give them try. http://www.zoologix.com/

The Acidified Copper Sulfate - where did you order it from? If it's labeled for use in poultry/livestock, then it should be fine to use.
