Cannot decide what this chick is (breed or gender) to save my life...

It looks almost identical to my Silver Sebright. Mine is 7 weeks now and I am still unsure of sex, so I can not help you there. Mine started out light in color.

This was mine at about 3-4 weeks old. The feathers got more white, and the legs got darker as it got older. It is my smallest bantam and started out very outgoing but has become more skittish as time goes on. Hope this helps!

This looks totally like ours!! Matter of fact, my youngest daughter said she thought this was ours LOL. Great picture! Thank you! Still wondering sex though... guess we wait and see.

I can't tell sex either, I'm a newbie to chickens so I will have to wait and see also. I figure it will either crow or lay an egg eventually, right?

that's what I'm thinking, but I've never been much of a patient person LOL.... guess this is one of those times my grandma would've said, "Patience is a virtue we must practice."

I did see a couple things on sexing Sebrights and it seems that males have pink comb and females more yellow?

I guess that might mean I have a female then, I do not have any recent pictures but there is no coloring to the comb yet. It was one of the freebie chicks from McMurray hatchery so I assumed it would be a male since most freebies are. That would be a nice surprise for it to be a girl.

for seabrights you will more than likely have to wait for a crow or an egg as they are hen feathered meaning you cant tell male from female by the feathers like you can on most breeds. most breeds the cockerels will get saddle and pointed hackles but on seabrights they dont get those feathers.

Any chance it could be a Serama? If it is smaller than your Silkies, it could be a Serama. The bins at TSC are usually marked in some general way- any clues there? You can always call them and ask the manager to let you know what was ordered in that shipment. They will also know which hatchery they received them shipment from and you can go to the hatchery website to see if they carry Seramas. It's really too soon to tell the gender though. A few more weeks. It looks like it's going to have gorgeous coloring!

We bought 3 NH Red pullets and 3 mixed Bantams from our local TSC (in KY) and I knew walking int he door I wanted a silkie or two if they had them. Luckily they had 2 whites I snatched right up. Then I had to decide what I wanted my final chick to be.... not sure why I didn't just get another NH pullet but I saw this little black and buff in the mixed Bantams who was just so very tiny I had to take a chance. I have searched the pages here and the www a million times over but can't find anything that captures all the features this little one has. I'm *really* hoping someone here has an idea and I hope the characteristics will give an idea.....

* tiny... like smaller than the silkies and hasn't grown much in 3 weeks but is the most outgoing and active chick of the bunch.

* started off as white/buff down on most and some black on back and wings.

* now, at 3 weeks it has predominately black wings though the center of each wing feather is snow white in long stripes.

* to date down is still mostly white on head and pale white breast/belly but feathers are still coming in on most of the chick except wings where it is fully feathered and feathers coming in appear to be black about everywhere, so what started out as a buff puff ball is now looking like it's headed to nearly all black.

* here's an interesting characteristic.... grey legs but peachy toes?

So, male or female and any idea what Bantam breed?

Thanks for helping us

Never heard of that breed.... it is definitely smaller than our Silkies. All the bin said was "mixed Bantams" so I knew it'd be a smaller bird and it was noticeably smaller than every other bird in the bin. I'll have to check back to see which hatchery they ordered from. I did call and ask what he thought it might be and he really didn't have a clue other than to say possibly a silver-laced wyndotte, sebright or lavendar something? I'm hopeful it'll be pretty and so far it loves our kids so should be a fun addition. Thanks a bunch for the suggestion... certainly gives me ideas of breeds to keep an eye on.

sermas have straight combs which this lil chick appears to not have, most the people i have talked to dont ever know what breed of chicken they have
