Just gotta share the frustration - my coop build has been postponed again due to rain. Which is just as well, really, because so has the lawn mowing, and I don't want them trying to build it in the jungle that my yard currently is. Totally understandable, because it keeps raining so much - but AGH.

Hopefully we can get it built before the chicks outgrow the brooder....

I sympathize. I'm working on my run right now, and in the past few weeks, work has been spotty due to rain. And one super-heavy hail storm..the worst I'd ever seen. But, better weather is soon to come for most areas in the USA (except places where it rains all the time, LOL).

We are building a coop as well! It's 8 x 8 and I'm so excited to start it, but we have tobecen out the ground and such first...

How old are your chicks? Mine are 4 weeks and 2 weeks...

Same happened to me, we had to postpone for 2 weeks I think, and then had emergency repairs needed in the bathroom... exactly why my favorite piece of advice is have the coop ready first!

Agreed. Hopefully I gave myself enough time. Coop is finished, just laid the foundation for the run, and the chicks come in July. I should have enough time to finish before they arrive!

We have had them for 2 weeks. Allegedly they should all be 2 weeks old - but we have quite the difference in how big they are and how much they've feathered in. Prolly within the bounds of genetic differences.

I can see the advantages of having the coop first - but I've also learned more, and changed my mind on details several times - thank goodness for the patience of the lady who's building my coop, as the waiting time has has several changes in it - that I think I will end up with a much better long term coop this way. But oh BOY am I looking forward to it.

I know they're not supposed to be out there until they're fully feathered, 6-8 weeks, but if I could even have them out there part time before that - Cera flew right out of the brooder box this morning when I opened it to clean out their water dish!

I'm getting really frustrated at the rain where I live too, it seems to be bright and sunny all week, then when we get to the weekend where I actually have some decent chunks of time to work outdoors during daylight hours - BOOM. Pouring rain.

Mine have been out since I got them at a week old. It's 80s here during they day and they do not want anything to do with any heat source. They're very healthy happy chicks scratching and eating bugs all day long plus bothering the hens which is their favorite thing to do. They steal their scraps and run really fast, it's hilarious. Last night they actually went into the coop by themselves! My DH was in shock when he went to put them in for the night because they were already in the coop just waiting for their door to be shut!

This new coop is technically for 2 chicks we got that are Jersey Giants. They need special accomodations so why not build an 8 x 8 coop that's 9 feet tall :clapthat will accommodate them and all our other chickens. They'll be able to choose from my composite wood coop (made for only 4 hens) or the big coop. We have changed the outside design ideas a few times... Cannot wait to have it done in a few weeks. We break ground tonight!

Hopefully getting my run done this weekend..coop is done for the standard flock and their already out just need their run done...we’re buying coops within my coop lol just three sided with open front of hardware but there 4x8 I think...the big coop is huge gonna have two of the coops inside one for the big girls and another not yet built that will be divided in half one side for D’Uccles and the other for Silkies .,.ducks already have a house just need get their run done it’s gonna be a busy weekend!! I think I may put my smaller bantam chicks in the duck house until theirs is built pretty sure they ready go outside the ducklings are just a lil over two weeks so not comfortable putting them out for another couple weeks ...just gotta have the other coop done by then lol...this rain has been very hindering in progress yard needs lots of work need garden planted I’ve had starters on my dining room table forever
