Welcome! You say you're in a city or suburban neighborhood with a nice backyard space. I assume you've already checked out the local regulations and ordinances to be sure you are allowed to keep chickens. For example, most HOA's will fine you for having anything beyond dogs and cats. Some cities allow chickens but limit how many, or require you to buy permits, etc. Chickens are hard to hide when they start laying eggs, because they're noisy about it. Even if the neighbors don't complain, you could still get in trouble.
Despite all the work involved, chickens are amazing. Everyday is a new adventure. Good luck growing food - my tomatoes and peppers failed last summer. Being lazy, I invested in a local CSA plan. Gardening can be fun, but I let someone else do the work.
