Okay, Got that, but it doesn't answer my question.

I really wish I could, but I have one choice for electrical, one choice for gas, one choice for phone/internet. I'm on a well + septic, or I'd only have one choice for that too.

And I have to go over my bill carefully each month because at least one of them has tried screwing me out of money somehow.

Corporations are in business to make money.

The problem is, some corporations are in business to make money and will lie, cheat, steal, and kill to do it.

Who are "they," and what evidence do you have to support this claim?

Sounds like conspiracy theory fare to me..

My old employer. Some of the higher ups have told me this. I will not name the company because most of the employees do not know this nor does the corporation want them to know. I will say it is about middle ways in the fortune 500. I also know they have moved machinery and shut down facilities for much less than cap and trade.

Wouldn't it be in the interest of the higher ups to spread this rumor if they thought cap & trade would force them to be more responsible? Wouldn't it be in their interest to try to get as many people on their side of the debate as possible?

Not to mention, you threw a "they" at me when you were actually referring to the possibility that ONE was prepared to move.. That's a little bit......

Well, I'm just gonna stop there.

Here is a better idea:

Why don't we provide some sensible regulation for them?

It isn't an either or situation. Yes, there is a point when corporations are too regulated. There is also a point when they aren't regulated enough.

Why don't people realize that corporations are just as bad, if not worse, than any government?

Especially when you have the situation like you have now, when the corporations are often running the government?

How can a company simply pass taxes on to us if we can walk away from corporations by not buying their products?

I hope you can see how patently contradictory that seems from where I'm sitting..

But i thought I did answer it. They both have the same goals right now (corporate america and the government) but the government is supposed to represent us, not control us.

Newsflash -- they're already leaving because A) we Americans cost more to employ and B) they can dump mercury laced formaldehyde in a pristine wetland in China and nobody cares.

So, yeah... Some corporations really are nasty, and a whole bunch are leaving anyway..

What I'm proposing is to force them into being NOT so nasty and joining the rest of the western world in their fight to prohibit the nastiest corporations from simply going elsewhere to resume their nastiness which, in turn, would serve to keep more jobs at home.

Seems like we could agree on that since we're both looking to end up in the same place -- more jobs -- but...oh well.

If the government is over taxing all of the companies, then we have no choice but to buy from at least one of them and pay the higher price. If a company is just trying to squeeze out extra profit with a so-so product, I can get better value elsewhere. I see no contradiction. I guess it's that old "strawman" argument again.

Um...actually, they are supposed to control us.

Not in the ominous sense that you mean to convey here, necessarily, but there are a bunch of laws on the books that are supposed to keep us from killing, beating, raping, and stealing from each other.. That's a form of control and, frankly, it's welcomed. That's what they're supposed to do.

If they were simply supposed to represent us without issuing any laws to control anything, what endeavor would they be representing us in, exactly?

I would like to compliment everyone on the overall civility of this thread.

I am impressed. Really!

Please keep it up and show that YES we CAN have a conversation rather than a debate!

Thank you!
