Car vs Rooster!!! Can he be saved???

Happy Hug A Chicken Day!!!

So after some further research on broken legs in chickens and how to go about mending them, I changed the way I had Lucky's leg splinted...instead of having the whole leg immobilized, I splinted and wrapped ONLY the broken area. Guess I should have done that right away, but in a panic I just figured I didn't want him trying to walk on it, so I wrapped the whole darn thing up.

I kept his basket covered fro the most part all night until I got up this morning so he wouldn't start crowing at 6 a.m. again and wake up the man child

Then when I uncovered him and put him down on his blanket on the floor, he let out 6 mighty crows in a row! LOL Well, good morning to you too, Lucky J

Breakfast for him this morning is a softened mixture of chick starter, layer crumbles, a few mealworms and some finely chopped bits of spinach. He's taken a taste, but I think he kinda mad at me for messing with his leg....perhaps I should revisit the idea of some pain relief for him....what do you all think?

Here's Lucky with his new splint and pretty blue wrap

Cute picture of you guys! Looks like you did a great job on the new wrap job too!

I was thinking about him eating and I just had one thought....Are you putting his food and water in a nice deep dish so his beak doesn't hit the bottom? I remember reading quite a few threads where when there is a beak injury, they used deeper bowls for food and water. Just a thought!

So happy for Lucky's progress!!

Love this story! You are Wonder Woman! Did that lady ever tell you the story? I take it her rooster escaped and was hit by a car, right? So sad but you're an angel for caring for him. I hope he pulls through.

I don't think he was really dumped....all I got for a story was that he was recently taken in by her from someone that didn't want him anymore

And that he was one her "free rangers" that like to go up by the highway....It's more of an unattentive thing than anything. They must let them out in the morning, go to work, and then put them in at night (I'd hope)...And not that that is so wrong, but if they knew that their chickens liked to go to the highway, then they shouldn't free range them while they're away from the house, in my opinion....

I'm just so glad that he is doing as well as he is....with how rough he looked when I found him, I didn't think he'd even make it through that first night, but here he is, healing and happy and loved

I named him Lucky because while I was driving I thought he was a plastic grocery bag on the road and I veered away and once I saw it was a chicken just hunkered down, feathers blowing in the wind, getting rained on I knew something was terribly wrong....I went to the next road to turn around and while waiting to complete my U-turn I saw a delivery truck aiming RIGHT for him and then swerved at the last second...again, feathers blowing in the wind and he got splashed from the truck passing...so he's not only lucky that trucked missed him (not to mention what other vehicles came before me...except for the one that DID actually hit him) but lucky that I came along, not patting myself on the back here but at least I have resources....Um, like the BYC!!!

His appetite did go up a little today and I baked some egg shells, crushed them and mixed some in with a scrambled egg...he still didn't clean his plate, but he did eat some and had a somewhat solid poo today so that means he's getting SOMEthing in him.....

This funky footed, feathered fella has stolen my heart...I heart my Lucky J La Roo
