I'd LOVE to do chocolate ones, but EVERY time i have tried melting chocolate it seizes up on me.

You need a double broiler. You can do this by putting a pan inside a sauce pan with a little water in the bottom pan. The steam or heat of the water will be against the bottom of the pan with the chocolate in it and melt it with out burning it.

Do you like cinnamon? Can you find those little bottles of cinnamon flavoring? I use to make cinnamon tooth picks with that liquid as a kid. Kids always loved it then. Anyways if you can put some of that liquid in the red dipping sauce stir it up and then dip your apples. You could also then dip the apple in red hots after the red sauce.

Didn't look through all the posts, but you can find the sticks at craft stores, like Michaels or JoAnn Fabrics. Ask a sales associate where exactly they are located. I have even found them at Walmart and Meijer (grocery chain in the Midwest).

Most grocery store apples are cited in VERY thin wax coating. This will make the caramel coating slide right off as it cools. If you can't use fresh picked apples dip grocery store apples in boiling water for 15-30 seconds to melt the wax. If your farmers market is still going you should be able to get unwaxed apples there. I prefer plain but nuts, choc. chips or mini marsh, allows I think are most common. You can also melt chocolate and drizzle it over the apples.

If the kids are going to eat the apples right away after the game I like to slice the applescup and just serve them with caramel dipping sauce. Much easier to make, eat, and clean up after. The kids will also be less messy. You can make your own dip or buy tubs in the produce section of your grocery store.
