Raven lost track of Meric in the dark. She leaned closer to the tree she was standing in to try to find the men without letting herself be seen as she listened for the men's movements.

Linden reached the edge of the bank at the same time that the bandits extinguished the torches. Without the light, the bandits were virtually impossible to see or hear with the waterfall in the background. He knelt down beside Pike and waited, still staring warily into the dark trees. Part of him was still unwilling to carry his friend's body across the water, but part of him was still in touch with reality and the fact that he was no match for any of the approaching bandits. He could either wait to be killed, or attempt to carry Pike across... which had a more than 50% chance in ending in death anyways. How cheery...

He decided to try and move Pike's body, because there was no way he would abandon the guard to be mutilated by the bandits. While Algar inched forward, he got to his knees and hoisted Pike's body back on top of him. He figured that it would be safer to crawl across the path so that their centre of gravity was lower. It would take longer, and they would get wet, but he couldn't think of anything better. Using one hand to hold Pike, he slowly advanced on his knees to the watery path...

Algar and Chip stayed behind the tree trunks, unwilling to risk getting impaled by an arrow just to attack Linden. "Daylight ain't too far away," Algar called out loudly, trying to taunt the archer into moving. "We can wait."

Meanwhile, Merek moved quietly from cover to cover, eyes scanning the area where he suspected the archer was hidden, but hadn't yet spotted Raven. But there was some truth to what Algar had said. They had a clear view of Linden struggling to carry Pike's body across the water, so the location of the passage to the island was no longer a secret. Already, Algar was making mental plans to use that island to protect loot from other travelers.

Raven didn't move. She knew well enough what time it was, but she used the sound of his voice to find the tree he hid behind. He view of the lake was partially obscured by branches from where she stood, so she couldn't see Linden as well as they could when she glanced to the water. Suddenly she got an idea and pulled out her light-stone. She tapped a sequence and tossed the stone near the tree where she heard Algar then waited for the delayed bright light to go off.

When Linden reached the other side of the water path he was drenched in sweat and breathing heavily. The cool water felt comforting against his skin as he laid Pike's body down on the opposite shore. The bandit leader's words cut through the still, evening air and turned his blood cold even though he was sweating. Was there nowhere they could go that was safe? Or were they simply destined to be killed, or sold into slavery by the bandits? They could wait on the island all night, but that didn't mean the bandits couldn't attack at dawn. There wasn't anything stopping them now.

If they went in the island they would find that it was much more than it appeared to be. It was an old elvish place, created long ago by Raven's ancestors to be a safe place in times of trouble, mostly hidden from the human world. The first building inside was Raven's home.

Algar flinched slightly as the stone hit the ground near him and both Algar and Chip looked toward the sudden noise. Chip made a startled noise as the stone suddenly lit up, illuminating their positions. "Back up, back up" Algar said quickly, making a dash to a tree farther away from the water. Chip was slower, but followed suit a few moments later.

"Gotcha," Merek whispered to himself as he caught site of the movement Raven made throwing the stone. He began creeping slowly toward the tree where she was located, taking care to move from tree trunk to tree trunk in case she heard him approaching.

Raven was more interested in Alger and Chip for the moment. She drew another arrow and let it fly, then slung the bow over her shoulder and, using the tree branches like a walkway moved to another tree to keep track of the men. She hoped that Terrick would move his people inland to her house since she had invited them in.
