Carolina Chickenstock Spring 2013

Well, home at last and all unloaded! As usual, it was fun and friends and everyone chatting up a storm. There was so much to see and so many folks to talk with! There is Sam Bam (dixiebeast) and Gavin talking over some poultry pleasure. It was cloudy but very warm, in my opinion. And Matt in the background wandering around making sure everyone is behaving themselves. The field started filling up quickly after the gates were opened. And the amount of canopy's that were popping up every where was amazing! Everyone was ready for a day of fun in the sun and it seemed like this would be another lovely day of buying, selling, trading and camaraderie! Robert and Kris (KrisH) set up their pens across from us with all their amazing birds. SC was well represented once again with a small group of us set up together but we were surrounded by plenty of other friends from other places, too. Everything went great for the first hour or so and then we started watching pretty umbrellas pop out! And it rained and it rained and it rained but shoppers and friends didn't slow down too much! It was really nice when the rain let up long enough for the raffle to be held. But the umbrellas were not put away for long and everyone decided wet birds did not sell too well. Although the ducks enjoyed the fun! People started leaving a bit earlier than planned and as far as I know not too many had to be pushed out of the bottom muddy area, though we pitched in to get a few out. What a shame construction had made our regular spot less grassy. Justin Massey leans on his tailgate in the rain waiting for the next buyer to come along. The canopy's are great for sun or rain and I think we all had a blast even if it was cut a bit shorter than we would have liked. I am sure we are all excited for the next one and are planning on taking some items we had not thought to bring this time. All in all, I was very impressed with birds and products as Mary Bell (SouthernBeeLady) and I walked around looking at things and chatting with a few folks. We would love to have visited more but the rain was coming down a bit harder than we had thought it would and escaped to our own set ups to get out of the rain. We owe Trish and Amy a big round of applause for all the hard work they put into this and to Trish's husband for doing a good bit of work on it also!
Does anyone know the 2 women in the 4th from last picture in the post. I need to contact them. Thanks!

Just to let everyone know the tentative fall date is September 14

We were really impressed with the turn-out. It was our first time attending and we sold everything we needed to sell. We enjoyed looking at all the different varieties of birds! Brought home a beautiful little Tolbunt Polish pullet from Marci at Cardinal Ridge Farm. She had the most beautiful, healthy looking birds!!! It just made my day to be able to have one of her gorgeous babies :)

We met several of the BYC folks and it was good to put a face with a name! All their feathered friends looked great and were well provided for - even in the rain.

We were kind of shocked to see one group of people leaving with soaking wet chickens in rusted wire cages with absolutely no covering whatsoever on a flat deck trailer! Not sure if that is even legal?? It shouldn't be

It was very upsetting to see someone so callous to the comfort and care of their animals. It also bothered me to see the young chicks at some of the tables/ground soaking wet and shivering with no covering at all and no sign of sellers trying to cover them or load them up to leave...??? And there were even baby bunnies getting soaking wet with no cover or shelter and no attempt to even try to cover them either. I do know that baby bunnies DO NOT need to be wet nor do they like it. It just really made us really sad and disappointed.

Overall, the majority of folks seemed to really care about their poultry and had tents and covers (and some even heat) for their babies. It really was too bad about the rain. There were so many folks there until the rain started to pour down. Hopefully, the weather will be better in the Fall and folks will take a moment to watch or listen to the weather so they can arrive prepared to protect their animals from whatever mother nature has in store.

The caramel apple bourbon butter was worth going for, too! My husband is already wanting more and we bought 2 jars! LOL! Guess we will have to wait til Fall....

Kudos to the folks who put this event together!!! I'm sure it was a lot of hard work but it really was worth attending.
Thank you very much and Just fyi, I do ship!!!

I want to add my thank you to all who put this one together. Dispite the rain, I had a great time. Loved meeting so many new people. Made alot of new friends. Bought a couple new girls to replace a few my granddaughters dog killed. These girls will have to remain put up. Don't want any more tempation for the dog. I agree with all the others. Some birds were beautiful and well taken care of. Some not so well. I was expecting the rain. We had looked at the forcast before we left home. So we were prepared. Can't wait for the next one. My sister ask me as we were leaving, when and where is the next one. She said Fall is to far off. I agree. But if not before, hope to see everyone there and lots of sunshine for the next one.

Marsha, you were one of the ones who was very prepared for the weather and even had heat for your babies! They all looked happy and healthy. If I decide to get a silkie roo, I will be contacting you or your sister. I will let her know about the blue Am. roo!

My two Silkie babies I got from Marsha are now happy little cheepers with their new mommy. My broody hen took both of them after just a few seconds of confusion. My little gosling followed me all around her little playpen today when I let her play in the rain puddles. Very pleased with everything I brought home.

One thing that did disappoint me , a man bought my two Muscovy ducks, and proceeded to resell my drake at a higher price. While he had Oliver, he was shoved into a tiny crate with a strange drake and two roosters. He was carrying my poor broody hen by her feet as well.
I was not there when the man came by, so not only was this treatment outrageous, he refused to wait until I was back and could tell him the correct price for the ducks. It took me all of thirty seconds but already he had shoved the money into my boyfriends hand, opened my cages, and taken my birds. I almost caused a scene because I was VERY angry at the way that my birds, and my bf, were treated. Then later on he had the gall to come ask me if I had more birds at home . I was very rude to him and would certainly have said some not nice things if there had not been a lady at our tent looking at birds.

Oh my. I would not have been as nice as you, I'm afraid! How awful.... It was apparent that not everyone there cares about their feathered friends like most of us do. Angela

BIG thank you to those who helped push me out when I got stuck on Saturday!! Although it was a bust for me (business wise) I had a great time and met some great people... not to mention coming home with apple butter, blueberry bush and 3 BEAUTIFUL birds!! See everyone in the fall under a different business name (switching to more of the farm theme we are heading towards and away from mommy recycles)

I only took two pictures, one of my booth and one from my booth when it started to downpour... but I figured those who didn't make it should be able to share in the joy... lol

Yes! There was a man there that looked at our ducklings but did not want to pay the $5 each for them. He said if we still had them later and wanted to sell them and could cut him a deal then he would take them.
Before my husband could say anything nasty to him I jumped in and informed him that I did not breed strictly to sell. I sell only what is left from my breeding program that I do not need and I sell extremely well from my farm so if the ducklings did not sell then they would go home with me without any problem.
I saw no reason to be rude to someone that did not understand my situation. However, my hubby was about to tell him that he would not sell to him cheap since he figured he would not take care of them and just wanted to resell them to make a bit of profit.
Some people just hatch out to resell but that is not my goal, it just happens to be part of what I have to do in order to proceed with producing better animals. I saw people there with tons of birds for sale and do not condemn them for hatching just to make a bit of money but at least they were caring for the birds.

Oh, and the man that had his birds in wire cages with no covers on them lives right near there so they were not out in it long on his truck and trailer. Thank goodness.
