You are right to be wondering --- unexplained weight loss is a symptom to take notice of and investigate.

Could be hyperthyroidism, in which they will eat / drink more but still lose weight.

If you are concerned then it seems to me it may be worth pursuing, evne if he was deemed "healthy" at his last vet visit.

The first and major step would be to take him back to the vet for another exam (specifically oriented towards his weight loss) and a blood panel to be done. A lot of things that can cause creeping weightloss will show up in bloodwork (thyroid, kidney, liver, diabetes, some cancers, etc) so even though it costs a coupla hundred dollars it can be reaosonably informative in ruling in, or ruling out, possible problems.
