I really hope your lad pulls through his poisoning. Cats can be so resilient, so if he is hanging on, there is a good chance he will recover! If he is still producing urine, that is a great sign his kidneys are still doing something!


My new kitten passed her well kitten vet appointment with flying colors. Apparently she was the best behaved kitten of the day. She has an almost inaudible meow that she doesn't use very often, but purrs up a storm when noshing on wet food or getting petted on. Hopefully she settles in here well. Right now, she has a big dog crate when she isn't being supervised. We're making sure she gets a lot of love to make up for leaving her mother and brothers.

Adorable kitten! May she live a long, healthy and purrfect life! Thank you for your thoughts. It seems my kitty was probably not poisoned. It seems he likely had a stone that blocked his kidney. I still don't have details as the focus is on keeping him alive and getting his kidneys to respond. So I'm thinking that that stone caused the kidney failure and he started munching heavily on the greenery in the house because he was nauseous. The intestinal blockage was unfortunate and independent of the AKF. As I read about chronic kidney failure, which it seems he will have if he makes it, is terminal and requires intensive ongoing care. CKF cats generally don't live more than a few years. I didn't realize this. Ochochicas's cat lived to 9 though! So, you never know what will happen. I'll do everything I can. Just wish I had lots more money.

Thank you Ochochicas. He's in the state's fancy animal hospital getting IV fluids. His creatinine level was 20 when I brought him in and it's down to 10. The vet STILL won't say he'll likely be okay. He says that he's seen some cats' levels plateau before getting down to a normal level, which would not be good. He's waiting until it goes down to about 5. Well, I'm encouraged.

They think it may not have been the plant, but a stone that blocked his kidney. Strange that the two events would happen together, but coincidences do occur. It's encouraging to hear about your cat. 9 is a bit premature, but it's not bad and it's immeasurably better than 5 months! Yes, if Moo makes it, he too will have chronic kidney disease. as the vet says there is a lot of damage to the architecture of his kidneys. I grieved a lot yesterday and today, and I was so distraught about him suffering, but I went to see him tonight and I feel much better. I had no hope, but now I do. I just love this little guy so much. He goes around the house letting out this tremolo twerping sound when he's happy, never heard a cat make a sound like that.

How are your chickens? Did you get more? Have the vaccinated ones done well? Has Marek's let you and your flock be?

My kitty only lived to 9, but the vets said she'd die without a kidney transplant. She was born with deformed kidneys so I don't think she ever realized how sick she was. The first time I brought her home from the vet at 5 months old I told her she had to drink tons of water so she could get better. I set her on the floor and she walked over to the water bowl and started drinking water. It was like she understood what she had to do. When she finally got sick at the end I was out of town and had a housesitter for 3 weeks. The housesitter was not giving the cat fresh water and I believe the cat got dehydrated which caused her kidneys to shut down for good. I still blame the housesitter for killing my cat, but there is really nothing that can be done about it. She was on IV fluids at the vet. Kitty lived long enough for me to get back from my trip. I gave her SQ fluids daily at home and syringe fed her liquified food, but she couldn't keep anything down. She'll always be my best kitty, but we all have to move on at some point.

Thanks for asking about my chickens. I am up to 40! LOL I'm actually doing a vaccine experiment with Marek's vaccine so I had to keep a lot of chicks this summer. Sadly I lost two more birds last week to Marek's. One of them was vaccinated and the other one wasn't. Everyone else seems totally healthy at this point, so I'm hoping for the best.

So sorry to hear about your kitty. From what I've been reading, however, that she lived to be 9 is awesome. I'm sure I'll have to do the SQ at home and who knows what else. I am now assuming Moo will come home and I'm looking for a low-phosphorous cat food that's not got by-products in it. There doesn't seem to be anything that gets close to Hills .4%, but Wellness has some that are about .67%. The higher quality food may offset the higher phosphorus. I'll see.

Well 40 chickens is a lot in my book! I don't know how you keep up with the poop and mess. My three little birds are slobs and as I clean up after them every day, I wonder about those of you with lots more birds. Of course, half the mess is their food - I got into the habit of mixing Scratch N' Peck with all sorts of stuff, including black soldier larvae, in my (their) food processor. It ends up as a wetish food and it makes a mess. They won't touch the straight feed now, almost never anyway, and I'm still worried about starving them out for fear that whatever was wrong with them will come back. But even the poop with three is quite plentiful!

They are laying again and gaining weight. Besides the enticing food I practiced some voodoo - bio-magnetic therapy (my crazy sister gave me some magnets), hypericum, even laced their bedding with calming herbs from the garden. However coincidental it may (or may not?) have been, they started eating something the next morning after their first hypericum dose, after having no appetite for 5-6 weeks. I often try these kinds of things, just in case, and figuring they can't hurt. Maybe, if they have Marek's, maybe my efforts allowed them to develop resistance and go into remission. On the other hand, I still consider it all voodoo, and figure it was most likely not Marek's, that is was some other undetermined illness, and a coincidence that they started to eat. I would do it again though... My vet is kicking himself for not taking a swab of my roo's tumors. Then we would know with much more certainty.

I'm sorry you lost two birds last week. I hope they were the last. Thanks for the encouraging words about the kitty. Your story gives me some hope that Moo could live beyond the 1-3 years that seems to be the norm. Sorry about that cat-sitter too. It's amazing what a crappy job so many people do.

I know he so cute and has the quietest meow. He will hiss back at tucker when he hisses at him and stays put won't back down. Tucker will ending up leaving the room. Tuc is. 3 years old.

What a adorable kitten Stacykins!

I'm so sorry about Jasper, silly4buttons! It's always hard when our kitties lose their lives to the road. When I was young I had a black and white kitty named Purr who was hit by a car just few months after I got him. He was a such a sweetheart and tolerated my sister and I dressing him in baby doll clothes. Bailey sure is a cutie pie!
