Caught a big rat in a hav-a heart trap

If you trap them in a bucket trap, cover the bucket and run a hose inside from the exhaust from your car or lawn mower for 30 minutes. They'll fall asleep and die.

A BB gun shoots bb's but not pellets and they are smooth bore. A pellet gun shoot pellets or bbs and has a rifled barrel. BB guns are basically target practice "toys" (but are still a gun, treat them like one. Pellet rifles are high power, accurate guns.
i checked the ammo tin and it said air riffle pellets-I tried using it today but it won't work, think a pellet has got stuck in it or something, so I'm back to square one again, guess I will have to resort to poison.

what name brand of rifle is it. And is it break barrel or co² powered or pump. If it has a pellet stuck you could use the rod out of a gun cleaning kit to push it out. If you don't have one you could just use a metal coat hanger

Hi thanks country, i have a relative coming over soon so I think he will know. I guess this is what my brother meant about it being difficult-guess the gun is not so good anymore. It's really old, I'm not even sure what sort-all I know is you open a small thing at the top, pop the pellet in, pull part of the gun back and then into place again and then shoot...

I hope you get it all figured out. If I was you I would not use poison anywhere around livestock. They all say it don't transfer but I don't by it I had a mouse problem in my garage and used hawk brand poison there and I had turning green cause that ate so much of it

Thank you! Yes I have been really hesitant to use poison-I didn't want dead and dying rats all over the place for one thing, and since I can catch them so easily in this trap it seems silly if i can dispose of them another way. plus I didn't really trust myself to be able to use it safely-for one thing I worried the rats might eat the poison and then eat some chicken food or drink their water and spread the poison to my chickens, and even to us through the eggs! I don't know how likely that is but I don't want to mess about with it unless really necessary. It's really scary stuff to me I have never used it before. Will update when I (hopefully) get gun sorted which shouldn't be too long.

Poisons are dangerous in general, but especially when it comes to rodents that have a tendency to 'pack' and store food away for later, if the chickens or any other livestock comes across that stash they can very well become ill from eating it... And although 'secondary poisoning' (animal eating a poisoned animal and getting poisoned itself) is rare it's not unheard of and there is a real risk with birds as they are generally more sensitive the the 'mammal' poisons and it takes much less to poison them...
