In Indiana you are not allowed to relocate raccoons could spread illness and ids they r a problem for you they w ill be a problem for someone else

The only reason you wouldn't be able to shoot it is if you live in town? And you live on a horse farm, which I assume would be zoned ag? Anyway, take it out to where you relocated it, check your shooting rules as far as houses (here it is 200 yards) and shoot it there. One you find your you chickens torn thru wire you will stop thinking they look cute!

I grew up in Middlesex county N J and to my knowledge you can shoot there. Every night in the fall and winter we went coon hunting, both for the fur and meat. lI know what you may think, but it is right tasty. Today it is one of the feature foods at the Ca. State Fair this year. To keep the coons from pullin the bait out the side of the trap, put the trap between 2 bales of straw or cover the sides with something. Make sure the trigger is not blocked. Bet you get 10 coons before Labor Day.

What I would do in your situation is leave the door to the coop open at night, let the coon eat all he wants and when all your hens are gone he has no reason to come back. Rid of coon. Is that legal in New Jersey? This deal come down to protecting your animals from predators. And you're looking for permission. That's wild.

Me, I would use a sub sonic .22 round and dispatch that coon in short order.

I'm not looking for permission. I hear what many here are implying. I'm a law abiding citizen and I'm looking to keep my chickens protected while doing so LAWFULLY.

Thanks for all of the tips. This thread has given me enough information now.

I'll continue on as planned and contact my local officials.

Ole Rooster.... This is a quote from the rules in this forum. I see that you're new, so you may have missed them.

"*Although some ways are not considered ideal to some, it serves the purpose of removing the offending predator. If you have an idea or a helpful comment, please do reply. If it is a sarcastic comment about the disposal or capture of a predator, please keep your thoughts to yourself. We are not here to judge one another on methods or ways and means."

Shoot Itsy.........I'm not judging. It's a problem for you to handle best way you can. I understand wanting to stay within the law. I certainly do that most of the time. I guess it's just me, but I will protect me and mine in any manner it takes. To protect your chickens against all predators is going to take harsher methods, and at times the .22 is the last resort, but the only one. I don't kill rat snakes, but I do kill the copper heads. One is deadly to me and my family, and that includes my animals. When I feel we are threatened I have no alternative but to do what is the correct thing to do and act.

To me it just looks from your post you don't want to kill the coon. But I don't think you want to wait till he gets all your chickens. Here in Georgia the coons and fox for some reason are infected with rabies. Of course not all, but I can't take the chance. Plus you know how government takes so long to do anything to help. If they will trap the critter in post hast, they are so much faster and have more time than the one's down here do. But whatever your happy with is what you should do. In rural Georgia we're pretty much told to "handle it".

I won't post to you tread anymore. Don't mean to upset ya.

It's not your judgment but your sarcasm that bothered me. Your second post is much more palatable for me. Thank you.

i believe there is a law somewhere where you have the right to protect your animals from wild animals now if your not a person to shoot a raccoon. like finding them cute or just dont have the heart thats one thing but for me i would still obey the law and find a place where that animal can be put down. my girls mean the world to me and im going to protect them anyway i can. but the law is the law and even if we dont agree with them. we need to follow em.
