CAUTION- Hang your HEATLAMPS high. GRAPHIC Story

So sorry about your girl! :hugs

I use these heat lamps in my coop--premier one prima heatlamp. The cage helps keep feathers and shavings from reaching the bulb and the openings don't fit even two fingers, and I have small fingers. This type really sets me at ease. I highly recommend this brand!

None taken, just trying to create awareness without the discussion besides the point! :) <3

It truly is! I consider myself a fairly decent (or trying my best) chicken keeper that looks after his animals as good as I possibly could.

It is unfortunate how such simple, over looked things can cause such devastation and therefor I would like to warn people about this incident.
In 4 years I had NO incidents with heat lamps, so stuff like this gets simply over looked after all this time.

Very true, and there are always risks involved in keeping any animal. Don’t heat and risk -30 Celsius, frostbite, frozen birds, or heat and take all the often mentioned and well stated risks associated with that. In the end we are all trying to do our best for our birds, sometimes it doesn’t work out, or a bird will manage to get creative and find a way to foil even the most carefull safety conscious keeper!

I was contemplating of removing the guard all together, but if the light/bulb ever falls it will start a fire for sure.

I know you already got suggestions about putting a smaller opening wire like hardware cloth over the guard, but another reason to consider doing that is bulbs can shatter and the hot shards raining down could possibly also spark fire, so that's another thing you want to consider if you plan on continuing with this sort of heat lamp.
