Cayenne Pepper - Got it - Now what!

I was about to give up on it and today collected 13 eggs.

Maybe it takes time to work or they were ready to lay anyway.

After reading all of this.. I may try (doesn't hurt). The only question I have is if the Cayenne alters the taste of the eggs?

I tend to agree with you. I've been mixing a 1 an 1/2 TBLSP in a about 1 and 1/2 lb of scratch for 13 various hens (see bellow) for about a month. I still get betwween 3 to 6 eggs a day, go figure. If it works as a natural dewarmer I don't mine keep doing it.

Actually I'd say the same thing about it's effectiveness as a wormer. Show me a scientific study that suports it otherwise I think it's like most other "natural" remidies-bunk.

Well I never would of thought Cayenne Pepper because everything I read says don't get them anything spicy and holy crap cayenne pepper is hot...but going to try. I only have 2 hens just starting out so this has all be so helpful. They are in a coop but everyday I let them out for 3-4 hrs. They get warm oatmeal in the morning with a banana and then some greens...

I get the big jugs of cyanne pepper FLAKES at sams. I have a spot where I pour some about 1 time a week. they get used to getting it & It will start them to laying again. It is supposed to be a wormer for then also.

Maybe that is what increases the laying.

I don't know if pepper will increase laying or do anything else. I do give it to my girls in their food just in case. I use 1 container all winter cost about $3.00. I just add that to the cost of 20 bags of feed. For that much I can afford to take a chance!
I think of it like grandma's chicken soup for a cold. No major study! If nothing else it makes grandma feel better giving it to you. So if you want to feel better give them pepper! LOL

I've been waiting for my Hamburg to start laying again for months. She went through a molt in September. Started giving red pepper flakes with morning feed for the past few days. Finally got an egg from her yesterday. Don't know if it is a coincidence, but maybe it jump started her. The egg, however was a bit of a fart, soft on one end. But definitely an improvement on her just being a freeloader for the past four months!
