Cedar Shavings - Question

I have seen semi truck loads of low quality cedar shavings used for commercial turkeys with no ill effects in birds from dayh old to 22 weeks of age.

If they are so bad why would thousands of turkeys that grow to be worth $50 to $75 each be put at risk?

I don't know about other animals but in chickens and turkeys the fear of harming the birds is supported by little more than old wives tales.

i do the same if you use it in moderation not a whole lot at a time it is the best keeps the coop smelling good and helps with the mites if you have really bad mites just use only cedar shavings in nesting boxes

My chicken 'buddy' at work, who happens to be a board-certified internal medicine vet, uses cedar in his large, open coop. He opens the bag and lets it air out for several days, then puts it right in. He's had no ill effects.

My neighbor uses cedar shavings in her coop with no ill effects. Her birds look better than mine do lol. I've read a lot on both sides of this issue and couldn't possibly draw any conclusions one way or another at this point.

You see my big chicken pen has been used for goats and such before the chickens ever got in there so there is like 4 - 5 ft. of hay poop etc not counting the chicken mess ... so everybody keeps telling me to clean out my coop and I'm going "I CAN'T!"

So could I just sprinkle the cedar on top of that? I was going to get some DE the other day but it only came in a 5 pound bag and was very $$$ ..

you could put it on top but i would not recommend you do that the best thing to do is clean it out and put cedar down but in your case you should probably just dust them get the 5 pound bag is sounds like alot but it is well worth it for the next time

Believe me I have spent a week cleaning out that coop and at the end of the week it didn't even look like I had done anything!

I will try to get some of the poop out behind the roosts and maybe some other stuff but I don't know how much I can do because I have back problems ...

Tomorrow I'll give it a try though!
