as far as the certified pre-owned phones, that is what i hope to do when i do get one.

they may have had issues, or the previous owner may just not have liked it and returned it. regardless, they are fixed (if issues) returned to new-like condition and cleaned, and are tested rigorously by people. the new phone you buy may have been next to a phone that was tested, but you're putting your stock that it is going to not fail, into the fact that the phone next to it didn't fail in a quality test. very little testing is done to a new phone. that CPO phone, though, has been powered on and off at least 9 times, everything from the keyboard, apps, functions to the jacks on the outside have been tested, and is guaranteed to work. still has a 1 year warranty, and for my money is better than buying new. you just may have to deal with a tiny scratch on the case here and there (not always, but it is possible), which you would probably put on it in a week, anyway.

that is the route i plan to take if it is available to me when i get one.

If you've ever had to warranty-out a phone for malfunction (I did with my BB Curve like 7 times!) then you have had a CPO phone. They do have the same warranty, so you just flip them if there's a problem. That's the other benefit of paying that $5 a month in insurance- you can always return for a different 'like-new' phone if there's a problem.

On the 4G vs. 3G, upgrading a network puts it in a position to run faster for anyone capable of going faster, like adding lanes to a highway. It doesn't easily allow you to differentiate between going faster for those paying for it and going slower for those not paying for it without a lot of work, and I'm certain they'd rather just charge more. Our cable company had to install lots of equipment and put in identifying information for each customer in order to ratchet-down the bandwidth speed on those who didn't want to pay more for their internet. It was a huge pain for them, but ultimately paid off. Perhaps they will eventually differentiate within the cell industry, too.

I have a BB Tour also and when I get around to replacing it will do so with a BB Bold. The track ball on the tour is my only (minor) complaint.

I've got the HTC Droid Incredible and love it. They just came out with a second one.
Might want to check it out too.

I get on BYC from it all the time.
I'm actually using it now.

I have the droid x. Though its not one of your options, you may want to look into them. The touch screen is super easy to use and my internet is lightning fast (I live in the boonies). I was leaning towards getting an iphone, and the sales clerk whipped out his personal droid and told me to check it. I walked out with my new droid that day. Verizon and ATT have both changed their plans to no longer offer unlimited data (e-mail). The I-phones are using so much data that they are slowing the systems down. We are on Verizon and their service has slowed considerably since they took on I-phones. If you have a current contract with Verizon you are grandfatherd in. If you go for an upgrade when you are eligible the new plan will apply.

I'm grandfathered into a plan with T-Mo that will be making ATT cringe when they see how much I'm getting for so little...I'm glad we're where we are and that I don't have to worry about the new choices!

I have a Samsung Galaxy S, which is an older model of the one you're looking at. I also have the Blackberry Bold and original iPhone from previous accounts. I have an HTC through work. I didn't like the original iPhone, much like yourself. The Bold is the best option for texting and emails, since it has a built in keyboard. For apps and internet, it won't compare to the Samsung. The Bold is an old phone at this point. I would go with the Samsung, based on my experiences with the choices you've given us.
