Hi Lisa. Can't wait to see you again. Well, I started with 3 silkies . Then I incubated one of my silkie eggs. Got a real beauty pullet. Then I got a 10 week old white silkie, she had the sniffles, they went away, put her in with the others, and my roo got sick. My little cuddly-bun. He needed abx for 7 days. So now I have 5, and DH would KILL me if I get more. I'm kinda maxed out on chickens right now.
I'm going to give this guy directions. He can't come with me cause DH would flip out (guy thing). Seeya there, --Karen

hi there, everyone, Im new to the group. I would LOVE to come, maybe check out some of your babies. i havent owned chcickens before, but finally moved to an area that allows them, ( Dunnellon, Fl)....any input as to what breed is easiest to start with? Do i *need* a coop, or is free range ok? sorry to ask such basic questions, but you all seem know a lot about chickens, so i feel im in the right place.

I have Spec Sux eggs, LOL !

JAOH, Any breed you enjoy is a good breed, I personally like Orpingtons, Jersey Giants and Speckled Sux as far as large breeds and egg layers. Ask other people, they might say I like any chicken with feathers, he he. Free range is fine if you have a fenced yard, but I'd be weary if you don't because of loose animals that could harm them. Having a coop for them to sleep in to be protected at night, wether you free range or not is best, unless you have a breed like the Phoenix that likes to roost in high trees. What would be the main propose of your chickens?
