Central Missouri Hatchery- Griffith Poultry Farm

I can't believe I'm selling my sex links! I sold the three least tame ones to a woman who's replenishing her laying flock, and this weekend I'm selling my three most favorite ones (Oh I'm going to miss my sweeties) since I don't want my other chickens who are older picking on them. It made me so sad to see my sweeties huddled fearfully in the corner of the big coop while the barred rocks and Welsummers traumatized them. So of course, I put them back in the small portable coop. Luckily, the family that is buying my sweethearts (Ebony, Billy Jean, and Queen Egwene) is also buying the portable coop, so I know they will have a safe and familiar place to live. It makes it less painful. The older boy is interested in showing chickens and I know my three sweeties will make the best pets. I didn't know if hybrids have their own category at the fair, but my beauties are so healthy and shiny...
I will have to post some farewell pictures of them now that they are 2 months old. I will take some new pictures tomorrow, so you can see how they've grown. Here is a pic of the 'least tame ones' that found a new home today.

Farewell to Spawn and the Spice Girls: Ginger and Cinnamon. Karen is their new mommy.

Tomorrow I'll post my farewell pics of my three sweeties.

Here's some pictures of my favorite 2 month old sex links from Griffiths that I'm selling to a young man interested in showing at the fair- maybe 4H. They are such sweeties, I will miss them! At least I know they'll have a nice safe, critter proof coop to live in, since he's buying that too.

I will have to get some from him again next year, as many calls as I have had for people wanting to buy the 2 month olds! Then I can get my chick fix!

Thanks for all your support and resources BYC, I couldn't have done it without you!

Well, the initial posts said they are older folks, and low-tech, so I'd say that's why they don't have a website. It might be more bother for them than it would be worth to them.

When my fiancee and I get married (yay) and move out of the DPR Kahlifornia to Missouri next May (double yay!)... this is probably the guy I'll buy my chicks from if he has any available in early June. We would like Buff Orpingtons and Barred Rocks.

I'd much rather give my money to a small, local, mom and pop, old timey operation than one of the big guys.

That said - Any comments about their chickens anybody? I'm wanting true dual purpose birds, if I could get birds from 1930 rather than hatchery birds from today, I would be happy to sacrifice a little egg production for a little more meat. I'm hoping these folks will be closer to that than some of the big hatcheries are.

The new owners Chris and Ashley Haubner had posted some ads on Craiglist under Columbia/Jefferson City for week old chicks. So.....
I had to get a few!

1 Black Australorp pullet
1 Americauna Pullet
I got 2 white rock bantams
1 Silver Wyandotte chick
1 porcelain? crazy chick (acts like the sky is falling when I try to pick it up-I'm betting its a roo)

They've been very busy, and the website isn't updated very often, nor have they been able to keep up with the e-mail.
So it is best just to call, or you won't get a timely answer to your questions. If you call, someone will answer right away or they'll call you back quickly. They have a lot more breeds than last year, but didn't have any Silkies or Light Brahma chicks yet.
They were also selling some hatching eggs of some of the standard breeds: RIR, BR and Americauna at one point.

More in a bit!

Murphy's law: Your first time with chicks went fabulous! Therefore your second time will be awful!

Now I'm down to four surviving chicks. Tonight two were acting sick, one had clear mucus bubbling from its mouth, was limp and gasping, couldn't peep, and the other had one eye that wouldn't open, was limp, and starting to twitch its head to one side and back. I hope it's not contagious, but I did get them from the same bin..... So both the sick acting ones have been removed and euthanized. I hope my other 4 chicks don't get sick.

This morning, my husband found one of the bantams stuck in the small chick feeder and rescued it. So now I have the top on. This is my first experience with bantams. I need to rethink safety for the banties.

I also wonder if either of the two 'sick ones' were really just victims of my toddler acting innocent saying 'I just stay here' (and watch) while I changed his sister's diaper- mid diaper change I see him pick up a chick and try to give it a drink in the waterer! GRAY HAIR MOMENT! Now I have a toddler resistant top on the brooder, and know I can't trust him for a second, even if I'm less than 10 feet away. Maybe he drowned the chick and that's why it got sick. Last year he did great with the chicks, but now..... WAAAAAH!

Oh, I hope my other four do okay, or I will be even more sad!

On another note, I have 9 black crested polish eggs due to hatch in 2 weeks from my first incubator attempt. I hope I have beginners luck on my side!

I will keep this thread updated.

Okay, the remaining 4 made it through the night, so hopefully I'm in the clear. The other white bantam doesn't look very perky, though, but I'm crossing my fingers. I might have to get another 2 bantam chicks to keep it company.

I think I typed in the wrong breed for one of the chicks that I called 'porcelain' I'm thinking maybe its english game by the way it acts, and it has long legs. It doesn't want any hands near it and it runs away fast! It's going to be a pain to catch later......It was stomping on the sick chicks yesterday (what a mean little thing) so I'm naming it Godzilla. I'll have to post a new pic on 'What breed' to get a clue.

Ha, ha, I said I'd get 2 more banties and I ended up getting 5! 2 of them look so much alike that I can't tell them apart. All are feather footed except one. All from Griffiths: Here they are....

Aren't they cute! 5 banties only count as 2 big chickens, right?

Here's the latest pics of the ones that I'm keeping for good ( I had to add a bantam silkie in there that I bought at Orschelns)
They are approx 3 to 4 weeks old? I'm selling the Americauna pullet and a possible roo frizzle to a fellow chicken lover who likes variety, since 4 of my polish eggs hatched. I have to make room for them! Here's pics of the chicks, and my new polish chicks and one BR/polish cross

Note the chick Conga line!

Anyone want me to hatch them some WCB pet quality polish?
