I would say it depends on what its use would be, if he wants one to take out of the case and make his friends go OHHHH....AHHHHH then go with the Husky, the Stihl is the next best( Kinda a farrarri/porshe thing).

If he is gonna be a logger and use it daily I would go with either of the above, they are a high end saw and that is what you are gonna pay for.

If he intends to cut the occasional branch that is getting too close to the house Poulan or McCoullough will be more than enough. Bigger isnt always better, I will put my 14" bar with a fulll chisel blade against any of the Longer bars with a antikick blade. The Bigger saws come with a bigger bar, but the cutting ability comes from the chain, with the proper chain, if I could get a electric saw to spin fast enough it would outcut a Husky with a crap blade.

I would recommend the Poulan, especially if this is his first saw, once he gets used to using the blade that comes with it, go to a shop that sells saws, not home depot/walmart/sears and get a good blade make a world of difference. a full chisel blade will have 2X as many cutting heads as what you get with the factory saw, and will make a world of difference.

My first Stihl will be 13 years old soon. It has been run hard for all those years and is still a great saw. I cut a lot of trees, big ones, and buck a lot of logs.

I have a second newer Stihl, higher HP so it reminds me of a machine gun. But they cut VERY well and run awesome. Not cheap but I have not been disappointed.

Buy the brand of chainsaw that you have a dealer in the area. They can fix it and get you parts if needed. My favorite brand is Jonsered.

You wanna put your 14" up against my 20" on a 30" or more diameter tree?

Sounds to me like you are making excuses for a short bar.

Yeah, a good sharp blade is probably the most important thing.

not just the sharpness, but the style of blade too. And yes I would take you up on that challenge, I dont make excuses for my bar size, as long as the tree falls I am happy, if you dont know what to do with a big bar, you are just a danger to yourself with something you cant control.

Well listen, I meant to drop that tree on the corner of my barn, dead
center on my garden, and the top of my Nissan pickup. So don't make
fun of me. I never could have done that with a 14" blade.
