I would say it depends on what its use would be, if he wants one to take out of the case and make his friends go OHHHH....AHHHHH then go with the Husky, the Stihl is the next best( Kinda a farrarri/porshe thing).
If he is gonna be a logger and use it daily I would go with either of the above, they are a high end saw and that is what you are gonna pay for.
If he intends to cut the occasional branch that is getting too close to the house Poulan or McCoullough will be more than enough. Bigger isnt always better, I will put my 14" bar with a fulll chisel blade against any of the Longer bars with a antikick blade. The Bigger saws come with a bigger bar, but the cutting ability comes from the chain, with the proper chain, if I could get a electric saw to spin fast enough it would outcut a Husky with a crap blade.
I would recommend the Poulan, especially if this is his first saw, once he gets used to using the blade that comes with it, go to a shop that sells saws, not home depot/
walmart/sears and get a good blade make a world of difference. a full chisel blade will have 2X as many cutting heads as what you get with the factory saw, and will make a world of difference.
