"Changes to child labor laws hurt farmers."

they'reHISchickens :

Tell them they are NOT allowed to feed the sheep. <G> That will take care of things.

You are right. And when they finally yank our kids, screaming and crying from our warm homes, people will really see how badly the government was intruding. All of this stuff is to cut you off at the knees, a farmer without kids in training, he isn't a farmer for long. You do not just read about farming and know how to do it. This is stuff that is passed down, LIVE, through the generations.

From the time a kid can toddle after momma or daddy, they are learning how to farm and ranch. They are also learning how to be good people with their own minds. A farmer knows how to grow his food and he also knows how to store that food for later use. They worked hard saving their strains of seeds and lines of livestock.

Child labor laws and all these other regulations might "seem" okay, but eventually they will creep right into our livingrooms and our kids will not be able to gather our eggs or feed our livestock. They will be mindless drones to the TV and regurgitated government approved pamphlets.

That is the government, it is a creeping thing, full of venom, and like a serpent, it cannot help but to strike and disable or kill you.

Ha!
the funny thing is they're bright and helpful kids. if I try to explain to them WHY I can't pay them for sheep-feeding chores, their heads will tilt to the side, their brows will pucker up, and then I'll be stuck explaining how the world's a better place with all this government intervention and how everything will be hearts and unicorns from here on out.
oh, right,
I can't explain that part.
because then their parents will have to do THIS to me:

you know, to protect their virgin ears.

again, they are NOT outlawing kids working on small family farms with their families. They are outlawing kids working on large industrial factory farms. You know, the ones where the boss says "hey, I know you've never operated a several ton machine, but I only have to pay you $7 an hour so here's the keys"

my work history? I've been working on family farms, mostly haying, since I was old enough to carry out jugs of water. I've driven tractors, both the mower and the hay baler. Went to work at my first retail job at 17 and have worked ever since.

I read this:
DOL officials say the proposals will not impact current exemptions for children of farmers working on family operations.

the kids aren't mine, they're my sister and brother's, and my sister and brother aren't farmers, and have no stake in the farm. the farm's not a family farm, that is, my parents didn't farm either.

What farm operates like that? What farm owner would give the keys to tens of thousands of dollars of equipment without concern for proper operation?

Laws are slipped by the unaware public which strip the American public of the most basic constitutional rights. This legislation is not about the safety of children. I promise. There is big money behind this, and it will be the small family owned farms that suffer. Watch and see.

that is still the same. they are "working" with family and I doubt that you are going to be in trouble for letting your nieces and nephews work for you.

When the operation of farm equipment is prohibited on the family farms by those younger than 16 or 18, the family farms will suffer.

yep, 5 guys in flack jackets hunting my husband in our own yard.
let's just say that it's made me considerably less trusting that common sense will be applied by governmental agencies with the power to tell you what to do.
