Chantecler Thread!

For CFI breeders listing:

Then see breeder's directory on the left - it was recently updated.

FWIW, I have seen some of the PC coming out of Sand Hill and they have many issues with color, comb and type. I do believe that they have the correct genetic basis there, but most do not even look like partridge IMHO.

There are some more breeders listed here for Chantecler - they are breeding to the standard and for production:

I have my first Chantecler chicks in the brooder. Received 24 hatching eggs, the majority of them Russian Orloff but also some Chantecler. 100% of the Chantecler and about 80% of the Orloffs hatched. 23 more eggs in the incubator, so hopefully I will have more Chantecler in another week. Can't wait to watch the chicks grow, I love what I have heard about this breed.

I'm curious about the genetics behind the white Chantecler. In general, are the birds I/I, or do a lot of them tend to be I/x and if so, what would the most likely options be for the x? I have more Chante's hatching right now, but the chicks I've gotten so far are light yellow, with a grey cast to them in areas. I expected them to just be the standard light yellow chick color.

This is a crappy cell phone pic, they aren't nearly this dark in person, but you can see the grey cast to them over the yellow. The Chante's are on the left and right, the middle and darker bottom chicks are something else. As a side note I'm note worried about the "purity" of the chicks, I know the birds behind them, just curious about the genetics of the dominant white in Chanteclers.

I am real interested in your question about color purity. Hopefully someone will answer. What is the genotype for White Chanteclers here in the USA and CAN? Also are the bantam Whites as cold hardy as the large fowl Whites?
Thanks for any help anyone can give.
Best Regards,
Karen

I don't know anything about genetics, but the foundation stocks for the white Chantelcer are from white rock, white leghorn, white wyandotte and Standard Cornish.

What line of White Chanteclers did the Breeder say you have? In another words, what historical records were you given when you acquired these birds to let you know "the birds behind them?"

What do you mean by "purity of the chicks?" Are these ones registered in some association's purebred stud book? You do know that all chooks descend from the wild type Junglefowl and the Chantecler is a composite breed that Brother Wilfrid continued adding breeds to the Oka White Chants AFTER the 1921 SOP Whites were recognition by APA?

When I said "purity of the chicks" I meant that I'm sure both parents were white Chanteclers, both grand parents were white Chanteclers, etc. That a bird of another breed or color didn't hop a fence, eggs weren't mixed up, etc. so the blue/grey tone came from the Chanteclers, not some random Orpington or Maran or whatever. I am aware of the history behind the development of various chicken breeds, and the lack of stud books for them.
