Chantecler Thread!

Pics
Thanks, I won't be ready for any until next year or the next. I've got too much on my plate right now to try to get any for a while. Just wanting to know ahead of time where to get them.
Tnaks, agian.

My Patsy turned into a Patrick...yikes. Anyone in Northern California want him? 19 weeks old

"He" is GROGEOUS

If I were in Northern California I'd take him in a heartbeat. But, I'm just about as far away as you can get and still be in the same country.

I'm new to the breed and was just wondering at what point (before they crow or start to lay) can you legitimately sex a Chantecler? I currently have 8 buffs and while some have redder combs/wattles, they don't appear nearly as red in comparison to others and their size doesn't seem to be too differentiated. My birds are currently 14, going on 15 weeks. I wish buff was one of those colors that differentiated better with sex,

.

Anyone have pictures maybe? I'm going to try and get pictures up of my guesses up. They free-range so it is difficult to get them all together in one place, and asking for them to stay still then is near impossible.

The saddle feathers are a good sex indicator. The roosters should have saddle feathers that appear pointed and are very noticeable as they drape off of his back. Other than that...sometimes a crow is the only indicator you'll get.

See that the problem, lol. I don't see much saddle or hackle action happening. I'm hoping we have males at this point because by comparison we do have some (HORRIBLE) male partridge Chanteclers. Looking back on it, I think the boyfriend and I got entirely male partridges. Not wanting to actually do this, but the stock at CM Game Bird Farm & Hatchery is questionable. Our buffs look great, seem to only exhibit problems that aren't unfamiliar to other peoples buff stock (i.e. soft/loose feathering). However, of the 6 partridges we have, all but one has normal tail feathering. The rest all looked fine, soon as they finished molting away their down entirely their tail feathers all started to get twisted. Even if we do have females they aren't worth breeding.

On the plus side, I have learned though how to check for smut in the buff chicks. I posted some pictures of the chicks a while back, when they were still a little less than a week old (https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=243277&p=11 ). If y'all already know this, or it has been mentioned on this board before I apologize - not trying to be redundant, but I'm excited that I can say I know something about chicken colors

!! Back to the smut, the little speckles on their heads and any chipmunking in an indicator of smut in future plumage. Some people call it peppering, but if you're breeding for SQ then this is something you should look for with hatchery stock. I'm still very new to this, been less than a year since I bought my first chicken.

Oh, an like I said, ASAP I will get pictures of what I'm working with in terms of the buffs.

FINALLY got around to getting some good pictures of the buffs!! For y'alls benefit I edited most of the images to allow better inspection of the hackles (that's the neck right?). I am hoping someone can come in with a good eye as to the sex of these birds. I have my own speculations which I will post under the respected picture. Here goes nothing:

Does anyone have any of the WHITE Chanteclers from Sandhill? I was looking at their website and saw that they list them, but it said they were sold out for the entire 2010 season...do they still offer them? Were they sold out because the birds are nice, or just popular? Hmm.
