Chantecler Thread!

Hmm so pretty average for heritage then. Was wanting one more like 4-5 months if possible. I'm all for helping out the numbers on a critically endangered breed though, so they are still a good possibility for me :)

Our Partridge are ready at 4-5 months. At 4 months we got 3 1/2-4 1/2 lb carcasses (no neck & giblets) and at 5 months we got 5 1/2 to 6 1/2 for cockerels (no neck or giblets). At 10 months (final cull for cockerels) we had close to 8 lb carcasses (with neck but no giblets). We do feed a higher protein feed to start (28% game bird) and then move to a custom ration with higher minerals and wheat on the side free choice along with range/pasture.

Hi There,

Looking for a little advice on sexing our Partridge Chanteclers ... All hatched April 25th - 27th and are about 10 weeks old now.

We think these are both cockerels.

Is this what a pullet should look like?

Same cockerel as the far right in the first photo.

Thanks for any assistance in our sexing.

Susan.

I would think the red faces would suggest boy. I don't recall red in the faces of the 2 PCs I had until they were pretty close to laying. Here is a picture of one of them at about 12 weeks. They were Ideal Hatchery birds. Don't know if they would be different in the "red in the face" aspect from any other PC:

Given the blue feathering in your darker boys and the lighter and clean lacing throughout on some other chickens, I would guess they are girls.

Thank you, I have not found enough information about this breed. My Chantecler pecked her chick and made it bleed a little not too bad, but I was unsure about placing the chick back under her. my kids both of my older ones heard the chicks and took out of the nest to show me. My sussex took the chick and has not hurt it and had another one under her.

For such a delightful breed, I wonder at the moribund state of this thread.

I've considered starting a thread for the purebred Chantecler but realize I have my hands full dealing with my own birds and another thread I started a couple years ago, where I can talk all I want about the purebred birds...and the pretenders.

what do you consider "purebred" Chantecler?

Hellbender, are you back at it again? Last time, you said you had not done your research ...

I know, I was not well enough to argue then and I'm not going to argue now either, just make my point.

I don't care what arbitrary nonsense APA writes down, it doesn't make the colored birds with rose combs (that many partridge birds sport) anything but Albertans...at best and mutts at worst.

These partridge birds would be more accurately called Canadian Buckeyes, considering what is known to be in their genetic makeup and what likely has been slipped in.

I have made my peace with the fact that for now, the breeds are lumped as one and I am not the one to push for any real change. If anything, those who actually breed true Albertans should be up in arms but I guess they are happy to follow along as the 'Red Headed Step-children'.

Please don't misunderstand me. I think the partridge birds are beautiful and I suspect that some will arrive at my farm, sooner than later and be used in my crossbreeding program for capons. The difference in what I'm doing is the F-1 generation are the birds that I will use as capons and poulardes....no crossing them back and calling them part of another breed. I will keep my pure flocks, continue to keep them pure as I can with the stock I have or can get and carry on from there.

Have a good one!
