Chantecler Thread!

It's been a quiet thread lately, and I have a color genetics question. Is Chantecler white dominant or not? Monday a broody hatched out some cute chicks for me. Hens are white Chantecler, Speckled Sussex, and splash BLR Wyandotte. Chick sires are either Walter's brother the white Chantecler, or a BC Marans. One chick is blue, so definitely Marans-Wyandotte mix. Some are white, a couple have smokey markings on the back, and two have amber shadings. Way to soon to see comb types! I'd love to have a couple of Chantecler chicks to keep, but only if I'm sure they are Purebred. Anyone help? Mary

I think the white is dominant. Last year I crossed a BC Maran hen to my white Chanty roo. All 4 chicks started white. Of the 4 only 1 as an adult was yellow. The other 3 are white.

Mary, I have heard that white Chanties are both, but belong in the category of white recessive most of the time. So if they are cross bred, other colors will pop out not white. Our whites will produce whites, so if your broody hatched a white/white Chantie egg it should be a white chante. But from what I have read, if the white hen had the other roosters over her, the chicks probably will not be "white"?

I hope someone corrects me if I am wrong?

Some of my Chantecler, they are 7-14 months old in these pictures. The rooster doesn't have a black feather in his tail, that's from the rooster right behind him LOL

It looks like the same cockerel/cock in the 3rd and 4th photos. A couple things stand out about him that you may already notice yourself. His wattles are a bit on the large side and his shake color appears to lack the yellow I see in the pullets/hens. I suggest using a better male for breeding, if available.

It is the same cockerel.
His legs are yellow, I suspect it's more the lighting since his photos were taken in the shade with the cell phone and the other photos were taken in the sun with the proper camera.
His wattles are too big. I had my choice between two or three different boys. The others had smaller wattles but were also smaller birds. I believe he was a good pound heavier than the other ones. The next largest rooster also had larger wattles so… I went for the size, I can work on the cosmetic issues. He will spend at least half of his time though in with my layer flock so I'm hoping he imparts some good size to those chicks in addition to making nice big Chanteclers.
