Chantecler Thread!

Hi there, I see you over on the Bielefelder site as well :)

I have white Chanties and they do not like heat at all. they are bred for cold weather for sure as they have very small waddles and combs. However, they fare better in the heat than my EE's who also have small waddles and combs because they are white. My EE's are darker feathered. In Central NC, they will need shade, cool water, and places where they wont have to run too much. The size of them are large birds and they will pant if having to run away from danger in summer weather.
Ok, here's an idea. I was just thinking about your post above. What if we were to set up the small wading pool. Put in the block of ice to keep the water cool. Then fix up a filtered outflow hose which connects with a small recirculating pond pump which pumps water out of the pool, up and thru an overhead showerhead. ..which sprays water back into the pool. So the birds could have a cool sprinkling if they wanted. Is this something that breed would desire or just an overthought idea? I know they do swell in the snow. How about a sprinkling rain? I know they aren't ducks, smile.
Best,
Karen

that sounds nice! I never tried misting my Chante's so I am not sure how they would take to having water. I have heard of some people putting fans in the run, but really I just let nature take it's course and let them decide how best to cool off.

I know they hated flying out of the run and landing in a snowbank though. When that happened, they would literally "freeze" in place and make no attempt to get out.

I bet someone else could comment. Our Chante's just dig in a dust bath hole in the shade to cool off. So some shade and earth seems to really help my flock. We can get some sweltering days here...90 to 100 days in the summer with horrible humidity around July and August especially.

No Chantecler for me. Something happened with the MPC hatch. I guess I'll try to find some local or try again next year.
