Oh how well I remember!!!!!! Chicknfun was in the middle of her move and we were all in knots for her and their family's situation, so she was out of pocket...

Silver's been at it alot longer and is the secretary for Sally's hatching thread, I had just gone through 2 rounds of hatching within 3 weeks of each other, so it was all new but "fresh" for me...not alot of confidence!!!

Silver was the pro with the advise and "steady as she go's" hand and I just new that some of those chicks could hatch if you stayed at it! Those blasted thermometers...

A long 48 to 72 hours there....I was PM'ing Silver, asking, do you think you got her settled down, do you think she'll toss the eggs? etc. etc And trying to give you the, "hey, give 'em a shot, candle at 10 or 12 days, then decide whether to toss" speech.....

I even asked Silver about selling you the incubator she was putting in the yard sell, and she said the shipping would cost more than the 'bator....man, we were hoping like crazy you got that 'bator situated!

Really, this is incredible!! Do you remember the picture of that carton of cracked eggs she received, and was able to hatch those eggs that were not cracked but shook up real bad.....my dear, you were in good hands and YOU DID IT!!! Coudos to Silver!!!

OK, here is little chickie number one, shortly after hatching. So, that light olive egg next to him is his.

Someone on a different thread said that with that comb so large and defined at hatch, that he is probably a rooster. What do you'll think?

Here he is again, the picture not so good. It is TOUGH to get the camera to take a good picture through my old scratched up plexiglass or whatever it is made out of door.

The dark egg behind him, furthest to the right, is my favorite egg, and now has a PIP!!!! The other egg which currently has a pip is in the front row, left edge. You can only see a bit of the egg in this picture.

Hello! so glad I found this thread. While I find a breed thread very informative I haven't had a whole lot of fun reading it. So, I have found you people and am thrillled to have done so. I have 4 barred rock full sized hens that the neighbor added to my flock and 1 huge blue hen who is raising a banty chick she hatched. One japanese banty with one cochin baby she hatched and I have 5 cochin 13 week old cochin babes as that is the breed I am enterested in. These babes are developing mostly well and are fun friendly little 4 gals and 1 roo. I bought 6 cochin babies I thought but one started looking very odd so I thought it was a sultan but it hasn't quite grown right so counted its toes and it has 6 on one foot ans 8 on the other. Its a roo but has adopted 3 little guys that lost their mom and so has not been culled from my flock. I don't think you can have a chicken nuetered and he cannot be breeding but he is entertainment. Any way here I am

I have a pip! I have a pip! I have a pip!

Ok, so it hasn't actually hatched yet, but the fact that my last eight eggs aren't all dead is SUPER exciting. This pip is half a day early, so I now have super high hopes that the other eggs will hatch too!

I have to keep reminding myself that is might take a full day from that little pip to a hatched chick. WAIT, Alaskan, be PATIENT! But I am so super super super super happy that I didn't kill all of my eggs with my silly incubator!!! Oh, AND, that pip is PERFECTLY positioned in the air sack!!! So there is a very good chance it will hatch perfectly!
YAY- That pip is probably now a chick.....LOL

I must read further!!!.......LOL

Yes, yes, that one IS a chick! Make sure you look at cute chick pictures....

My first chick I have currently named #12, because that was the number of his egg. :)

But...no more chicks :(

I am still happy though, because I am pretty confident that the four currently pipped and peeping eggs will eventually hatch. That leaves three, not yet doing anything eggs, but they could still do something.

OK.....one egg, named "my precious" because it is the prettiest egg of the bunch pipped 24 hours ago. I kept watching it, and I thought that it was a bit malpositioned because it finally, after 20 hours, managed to zip only one inch. The membrane around where it unzipped had turned a bit yellow. I understand, that maybe that means it has now dried out so that the chick can't break it?

My RH has been around 70% for hatch.

Anyway, I went ahead and carefully unzipped the chick the rest of the way. The membrane, even when moistened, showed no capillaries at all. I put it back into the incubator, but I am a bit worried that the membrane is too much for the chick, and My Precious wont be able to break out. (I not removed a thin line of shell)

I have decided to wait about four hours and then maybe try to remove some of the membrane.

Any thoughts?

Anyway, I decided to go ahead and let My Precious out. I was correct, she was completely finished. Also, her head was ON TOP of her wing, not under her wing. So, I was completely correct in that she was trying to unzip but couldn't get enough force because of being malpositioned. Also, the first membrane was so tough, is was no wonder she couldn't break it, even though I had removed a thin strip of shell.

So, My Precious is on the floor of the incubator looking like a very wet brand new chick. Her tummy is perfect (always my terror when helping chicks).

The egg that pipped a bit after My Precious, I went ahead and looked at. But, there was some pinkness to the inner membrane, and the chick was also making that clicking sound that I read they make when their lungs are still adjusting to breathing. So, after the tiniest of holes, just enough to see all that, I wrapped her up in a damp paper towel, and back into the incubator.

Of the two eggs that pipped most recently, they are both trying to unzip. One on the bottom row far left looks like it is unzipping incorrectly. The beak is going back and forth horizontally, instead of vertically along the air sack. Anyway, I am going to let it sit there for at least some odd more hours, maybe until tomorrow morning.
hu.gif

The egg on the front bottom row on the right side is unzipping properly. So yeah!

OK, Precious still looks good, but tired and not scooting about. Lots of peeping though.

The correctly unzipping egg on the front row far right, IS HATCHED!! He was egg number 7, so I will call him #7 for now.

the silly horizontally unzipping egg got himself moved about, or something, and is now slowly unzipping like he should. Good eggy!

And silly #12 keeps trying to eat My Precious's toes! Silly #12! Poor My Precious peeps at him, and wiggles about, but can't crawl away yet.
