Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Last year one of my mama hens had weened her chicks. One night when I locked them up, I couldn't find the two females. I was freaking out because they were in an enclosed run. I was terrified that a rat or snake had gotten in. Finally I saw them. They were roosting up over the door above my head. 🤣
Yes it freaked me out I’m like if they jump from there they’ll hurt themselves but they seem to get down fine in the morning lol.

And I’ve seen them fall off cause they’re all over each other trying to get cozy, ones who fall off get right back on 😂 tougher than they look lol.

We have such a vibrant community here at BYC... tons of active friendly members. Of course, life gets busy, so I was thinking it would be fun to start a thread welcoming some of our peeps we haven't heard from in a while.

If that's you, come say hello and let us know what you've been up to. :)

(if that's not you, feel free to invite peeps you haven't seen in a while and say hi to those that post here)
I’ve been busy as a school teacher and started to have a hen hatch eggs this past January. In march I started up my incubator and did three or 4 successful hatches. Today I put in dozen Moran and Wyandotte eggs so we’ll see in 22 days. I heard Maran eggs are hard to hatch band they have darker shells.

I used to be somewhat active here several years ago. But, life happened in many different ways, had to part with my entire flock, etc, etc.

Am just now getting back into a place where I can have chickens again; starting small with some random egg layers, but hoping to get back into rare/endangered/niche breeds (my specialty many years ago) on a small scale as time goes on.

Out of the blue, BYC popped back into my mind recently and I decided to see if the site was still active. So many websites I had remembered from years ago are gone now. Turns out, my account here was still active... though it looks like most/all of my past interactions were wiped.

Hoping to be more active here as time goes on, and hoping to get fully sucked back into the world of poultry. :)

Hi again! Been super busy with my job, part of which is keeping chickens! Unfortunately I don't have as much time to enjoy them as I'd like, but I love my 8 girls! I am often on BYC researching answers to my chicken questions. 😊

Welcome back to the forum and the chickens! We'll be looking forward to seeing you around more. Best of luck on getting more of those specialty breeds!

Hello! Yeah, life gets busy. I'm glad to hear your flock is still doing well! 😊

Congratulations on getting back to having chickens again. Life can be a very un even journey.

What a nice idea! I lost one of my 4 chickens (Wyandottes), we are in the process of putting an automatic door on our eglu. I am looking for a netting that I saw on TV from a farmer who raised organic chickens. It was a dome shaped and it had mosquito like netting and he just picked it up and moved it while the chickens were in it. This would be great for me as when they are of their cage they run all over the place. Anyone see anything like it? It's not wire btw.

It really can! I won't get into super details, but my whole ordeal included losing a job (outsourcing to Mexico, the entire plant shut down putting hundreds of folks out of a job, unless they wanted to relocate to Mexico), homelessness, and a cancer diagnosis. Fun times!!

Took a while to dig out of those massive holes, and even now I am still not where I want to be (but getting there!). Throughout all that, I always kept chickens in my mind. And have a chicken tattoo to carry with me forever.

I'm currently living under a landlord, BUT he agreed to let me get chickens in exchange for some farm fresh eggs for him and his wife. Done deal!! So I got some assorted brown egglayers from the local feed store, they turned 2 months old on May 26th. Anxiously waiting for those coveted first butt-fruit!

I've also got some feelers out looking for a couple beloved breeds I had years ago, but eventually had to part with and have regretted every day since. One I found, but the other still eludes me and I'm starting to think they may not exist in the states anymore. :(

I will say, having chickens again has definitely boosted my mental health. They truly have. My little 6 are so fun to watch, they get me outside in the fresh air and sunshine more often, have made me more social with the neighbors, have got me back into gardening so I can grow some produce for them to enjoy, etc.

SO glad to have chickens again! But now I have soooo much to RE-learn about chickens. lol
