hey folks. im still alive in 25'! it's been a while since I've been on. only reason was i had a question and i noticed i had a message from admin. so here i am. im up to 2 coops with 40 birds and with the egg shortages / prices the girls cant lay enough. i have to take care of our regulars 1st. had to cull 5 2 yr. old r.i reds. they were barely laying. my father always had r.i reds and they were great layers. these ones barely had a egg a day out of the 5 in summer. they are in with copper marans and easter eggers so i know it was them. dont know what happened to the breed over the last 40 yrs. but these arent the r.i that we had growing up.

I agree with you. I used to love RIR. I don't think they are being bred like they used to, as most have moved onto to higher production sex link hens, so the breeding has suffered.

After a neighbors dog killed 19 chickens in 5 hours about 2 yrs ago, I quit chickens for awhile. My partner brought home 4 laying hens,Then a full grown rooster, then 3 more chicks, I'm back in chickens again.

Yeah I and another one they got really busy. I’m raising some baby chicks now. Two birthdates 2 babies just yesterday and one two weeks ago 5 babies.

I am sorry that you lost the first flock!

Dogs can be terrible predators.
