CHICHESTER, NH CHICKEN SWAP-( SAT. JUNE 27TH!!)

Having the kids stuck inside forever now that they're out of school was about to drive me nuts. At least they got out for a long time today and happily got covered in mud.

This is the first time in 6 years I've run into a problem. I have 3 youngsters in the "baby pen" that have minor symptoms. Unfortunately the baby pen is in a rather damp spot. Getting them out would definitely help, but I also don't want to expose everyone else to whatever it is they have. So for now they're stuck until we find out what the culture shows. Ugh.

When do you expect the culture results to be in? I am curious because everything I have read says chickens do not get colds .

I call them colds, but in all reality they are called Chronic Respiratory Disease.

I expect sometime early next week. The vet said it could take up to a week, which will be Thursday. It depends on how difficult the stuff is to grow in the lab.

Other than the gaping issue she said he's in great shape - no internal or external parasites at all. No breathing difficulties, good heart, and a reasonably good patient for a chicken.

Just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Fourth of July and share a picture my daughter took of her lil Polish chick "Rythm" she entered it in a contest somewhere on BYC..

Ok now what was that? Why through the eggs away? Can i still incubate them?

duramycin is tetracycline- if you are a child and eat the eggs, it can cause the permanent teeth to be stained yellow. if you incubate the eggs, it can cause birth defects in the chicks (affecting the long bones).

My vet said to not eat any eggs laid for at least a week, he prefers 10 days, after finishing treatment with antibiotics. All my girls are still too young to lay, excpet my 2 silkies one of whom is setting on a nest right now. I have read though that you can cook up any eggs you can't eat from treatment and feed them back to your chickens.
