CHICHESTER, NH CHICKEN SWAP-( SAT. JUNE 27TH!!)

Hi Heather, years ago when i worked in a bird shop, we would make up the watering jugs with tetracycline in them as preventative because at that time they were selling wild caught imported birds along with hhand raised. It worked really well and I am wondering if watering chickens the same way could be done. Or does it affect the eggs or meat. I wouldnt mind either because I cont eat the eggs or the birds, but now I am fearing respiratory issues. First I hear the horror mite stories and now colds....I am second thinking the chicken thing now?? Was my turken i got from you treated or should he be...he seems fine, like a big baby huey!

I hear ya on the smell...I had to move the pen today because the ground under it it a compacted mudd/poop pile...waiting for it to dry out so i csan add some lime and rake it out. Smells like I had pigs there instead of chickens!

The turken had been strictly living inside the house (in the jacuzzi) and with ALL my babies I put them on Duramycin until they are old enough to go off the medicated crumbles. I probably spend a lot more money than I have to on medicated feed/water but I rather be safe than sorry.... too much rain and not enough sun makes for bad conditions as we are all realizing-- some of us for the first time. I am a worry wart especially with cocci which duramycin will treat.... for $6.95 a bag if I can prevent it, I will. Hope this helps hon! PS I LOVE MY CHICKEN PIN-- and have had many comments on it at work )

Darleen--

From reading the instructions on the bag of duramycin and when I spoke with the rep. from durvet, she said to throw away any and all eggs for a week after you stop treatment. This way it gives the hens time to get the medication out of their systems. For some reason there is a fine line between "exotic" birds and chickens. The chickens are so sensitive and go downhill fast.

On a lighter note.....

When I left home I had one baby call duck hatch.... all by "its" lonesome. I had heard horror stories about these little creatures having a hard time hatching-- I am so excited. Hopefully when I get home sometime after 5am, it'll still be alive in the incubator and I can put it in a brooder. One other egg that hadn't done anything as of 8pm, so I will sit here at work and worry about it. Wondering if it needs help coming out of the egg..... Grrrrrrrrr

Ask me next week at this time.... LOL I cannot wait to see what you have been making and I need to send you a picture of my "daisy" so that you can make me a necklace of her!!! Actually there's pictures of her on the new yahoo site-- I posted a TON of pictures there yesterday!

Okay, I've been reading everyone's posts about their chickens getting respiratory infections, and now I'm paranoid. Today one of my chickens sneezed on me, and it was a really wet sneeze. Could she have this too? Their coop is pretty dry, and the whole run is covered, no puddles. Is there any kind of preventative that I should be doing just in case she does have a cold?

ETA: I know I'm just worried because I new nothing about chickens before I got these four. I researched a TON for about 6 months beforehand, but no first hand experience! I had never even held a chicken, but I was booksmart. I'm just nervous that I'm going to do something wrong.

As a preventative i learned you can do the Duramycin, 1 teaspoon in a gallon of water.
Pm itsanaddiction she knows exactly what the dosage and all that is, she is the one that helped me with the measuring for my flock.

At first i worried that i had made mistakes or mismanaged my flock---second guessing, you know. In reality, it must just be bad luck due to the sucky weather! Stresses both people and animals and birds!

Having the kids stuck inside forever now that they're out of school was about to drive me nuts. At least they got out for a long time today and happily got covered in mud.

This is the first time in 6 years I've run into a problem. I have 3 youngsters in the "baby pen" that have minor symptoms. Unfortunately the baby pen is in a rather damp spot. Getting them out would definitely help, but I also don't want to expose everyone else to whatever it is they have. So for now they're stuck until we find out what the culture shows. Ugh.

When do you expect the culture results to be in? I am curious because everything I have read says chickens do not get colds .
