Sweet babies!

I am very tempted to help this second one out. It's been trying for about 20 hours now, making slow progress. It now has a hole about an inch and a half long, 1/8th of an inch wide. Looks like the membrane is starting to dry out and it's broodermate keeps kicking it up against the side of the incubator.

If its not making much progress and the membrane is drying out id help it...

It is a real hard decision as to help or not. The time from pipping to zipping and then finally completing the hatch is not just resting. It's absorbing the yolk and just getting ready to face the world. Some do it quickly and some are real slow.

I shrink-wrapped one once early in a hatch by opening the bator. It had pipped real well but did absolutely nothing more. I figured it was dead. When I took the others out a day and a half later, it was still alive in there. I broke the shell off and left the membrane. Then I soaked the chick (keeping the head dry) in a cup of warm water for a few seconds, just enough to get the membrane wet. I picked the membrane off and put the chick back in the incubator to dry off. The fuzz was covered in gunk when it dried, but that wore off in a few days.

I don't know if I would interfere yet or not. I'm not there looking at it. If it looks like it is making progress or even moving around and chirping, I'd probably leave it alone. Otherwise, maybe warm up some water?

Sounds like it is the pullet eggs. Those do hatch but I have had survival issues with them. Glad you've got some.

I still want to help it real bad, but I'm trying to hold off.

Ridge, actually the pullet egg - EE/turken mix - has been out for hours, playing football with it's larger, brahma broodermate.

Thanks for the link HappyHens.

He's a cutie, but a troublemaker already.

He's totally ticked off about the height restriction in the bator. He bumps his head against the ceiling and when it doesn't give, he bumps it even harder, deliberately.

Oh, My! My guess is that it's the horns that are holding the upside down guy back. Hatch little chick, hatch little chick, hatch little chick-- Sourland starts the hatching dance and incantation---

Just don't get that mixed up with the broody magic. Impy Jr. is too young for that!
