Chick can’t close beak-help!

  • It was a string!!! Oh my gosh, I used tweezers to try to pull at the black line and I was afraid I was hurting her. I got hold of it right at the middle under her beak and pulled it up and over her beak. But! She quickly swallowed it before I could try to pull it out. Both ends were inside of her. I’m not going to try to dig it out because it’s long gone.
Oh goodness. Poor thing. Chickens are known for eating a lot of things they shouldn't hopefully it passes through alright.

Glad you found the string. Hopefully she will start to get better. I'm going to say she isn't out of the woods yet since there is a lot of swelling.

Thank you. Im hoping so too and will be watching her closely. I made a wet mash with chick starter and she started eating it right away. I haven’t applied the propolis yet and wondering if I should. The big swollen mass has subsided mostly but she has obvious swelling around the area. I so appreciate all the helpful information and the suggestion about the string/hair.

You could see how she does. It honestly won't hurt her and may help with some pain and swelling but if she seems to be recovering quickly you could skip it.

I would just get her hydrated and eating. Hope she makes a full recovery!

Oh gosh, thank goodness that you found the string, and thank goodness for @Wyorp Rock suggesting this. I hope she does okay after swallowing it. How long was it? Strings are very dangerous around chickens, including the ones that come off of feed bags. Hairs get caught around legs and tongues as well.
She swallowed it before I could see the whole thing. It was very tight to pull over her beak, so I’m thinking both ends were in her GI tract somewhere. I’m a bit worried about that, but so far she seems so much better. I’ll update with a progress report. Thank you all so much!!!

This whole story is almost unbelievable. I had already given up hope for the little chick, thinking her jaw was broken. I am thankful that @Wyorp Rock suggested the hair/string possibility. Who in the world would have ever thought that? This is a situation I will definitely store in my mind’s “playbook of problems.” You just never know. I am so thankful you were able to help the chick and hopefully she will just poop that string right out.
