Hi there, I had a chick hatch about 24 hours ago and a second hatch around 12 hours ago. The first is much smaller than the second, and hasn't fluffed yet, so I decided to keep it in the incubator until tomorrow morning, to make sure it's completely dry. I have him/her some sugar water this afternoon because of how small it is, and it was born with some yolk sac unabsorbed. He/she has been chirping very loudly for a couple of hours now, whereas the larger one is fairly quiet. I'm thinking it may be a distress call. Could it be to hot in the incubator? I can't turn down the temp. as there are other eggs waiting to hatch yet. I tried to give it water a second time, and it seemed fairly uninterested. Despite his/her size, it seems to be doing fairly well, except for the loud (almost constant at this point) chirping.

Did Chick #1 absorb the yolk? You say it's still hasn't fluffed, is it dry? Where is Chick #2, in the brooder? The chirping is nothing to be concerned about, yes it's a distress call cause it's along but may "help" get the other hatching. Not necessary to feed/water as newly hatched chicks are ok for 3 days without.

Do you have Sav A Chick or Nutri Drench, it's vitamin/electrolyes. Best wishes with your hatch. :welcome

Chick #1 is dry as of this morning, and #2 is mostly fluffed. Both are in the incubator, but will be moved within the hour to the brooder. I don't have a drench, both seem to be doing well this morning, chirping normally now. I read sugar water could help with electrolytes, that being why I gave it to #1. Thanks for your help!

Oh, he/she did end up absorbing the yolk. It still had the umbilical cord attached, but it's dried and ready to fall off soon!
