Chick feed healthy for layers?

We've got a broody hen and she will be getting chicks in a couple weeks.
We've only had chicks one other time and I have a question because I not sure I did things correctly the first time.

So, to set the scene, we have made a bucket into a self feeder (which I LOVE). We have layer feed in that (chicks cant reach). Once we had chicks, we put chick feed into a feeder that the chicks could reach. However, It seemed as though all of our laying hens ate that food too and ignored the layer feed. They are also free range and have access to lots of yummy bugs and vegetation. Im just wondering if that is healthy for them?

Yes, it's fine (with oyster shell on the side).

I think so! Oyster shell on the side would be great as a calcium source for laying hens, and I don't think protein will be a problem.

Also, when I had a broody hen I put her layer feed up where the chicks couldn't get it. So of course she carefully fed each chick layer feed. I gave up and put mother and chicks on starter.

Not a problem , if they can have calcium at will.

Most hens will prefer chick feed, as it's higher in protein.

I feed all my Pullets and Hens a Non-Medicated Starter-Grower feed 18% with a separate container of Oyster Shells.

I haven't bought Layers feed in 3 years.
I like the extra Protein because I give Scratch Grains as a treat daily.
I also have a Hen that hasn't laid since a predator attack took a Flockmate last June. GC
