Hello, This is my first post. I have a chick (1 of 5) that I think is approx 3 weeks old. It periodically has blood in it's stool. any ideas on what the problem may be? The stool is runny. I think its just one of the chicks but they are all in a tub with a heat lamp, so I can't be sure. but the blood is not in all the stool, just a small amount so I'm guessing it's a 1 chick problem.

It sounds like coccidiosis, put powdered milk crumbles in their food and replace their water with milk for a few hours. See if the bloody poops stop and if they do than continue the milk treatment every day until there is no more bloody poo. You'll know in a few hours if it's working.
I treated my chicks successfully this way without antibiotics, its a good thing to try first.
ETA when doing the treatment only replace their water with milk for a few hours every day, as they still need fresh water.

thanks. I'll try that. It hasn' been continuosly bloody so hopefully that will help.

That's good that you caught it early, and it can't hurt to treat all the chicks as it will act as a preventative too. Once they've been exposed to coccidiosis their immune systems will be resistant and they'll be fine after. It's found in soil usually, that's how my chicks got it.

Welcome by the way!

milk may help but if it is coccidiosis you should be feeding treated starter

chicks will need amproylium
I make a wet mash for chicks with coccidiosis

try and find the article I put up today or yesterday
bloody runny manure with blood in it is coccidiosis
the whole group aught to be treated for coccidiosis
using amproylium powder in the drinking water

It can either be ordered online or can often be found in the livestock section of the feed store. Some names to look for is Corid and Sulmet. They will be listed as Scours meds for cattle and swine but are usable in chicks too.

you don't need the med's. Milk treatment works just as well, in my opinion better than meds. and is better for them. I've not used med feed for over 3 years, keep your brooder dry, clean, not to warm and you'll be fine.

i'm a newbie too, and someone gave me this link which helps a lot - for future reference.

my chicks got cocci at about 4 weeks, and i used liquid corid, which i bought from the feed store - pint size for about $20-$25. it cleared it right up for my girls. i didn't know about the powdered milk thing then.

let us know what you decide to do and how your chicks are, ok?
