Chick Hatched, umbilical cord? still attached & bloated

I can see where it could have been taken as heartless. I didn't realize it was hatched THAT day, for some reason I was thinking it was a day or more old. So my comment WAS too soon, I was off there! And I definitely didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, because that's NOT how I am! smile I LOVE chickens, esp the babies. I have a hard time with killing them, and have had times when I NEEDED to be told to kill them, because they were suffering.

The things they will put us through!

Yea! The chick is still with us this morning... It is more alert, even standing/raised sitting. The swelling has not gone away completely, but it is improved by over half.

Is that correct, she/he can be there in the incubator for up to 3 days without food/water?

This weekend my first eggs hatched. 2 out of 18 from our own flock in a styrofoam incubator. My husband wasn't too fond of me trying to hatch our own babies, so I figured I'd try it out with a less expensive incubator. The first one to start hatching pipped from the wrong end and only had it's beak out. I read a lot on here, and left it be for over 24 hours... In that time it had only slightly gotten a little more shell off, and the membrane started to dry out. (Meanwhile, Eggbert #2 hatched and fluffed within a three hour period and was wreaking havoc all over the place).

Right now, Eggbert #1 is FINALLY out, but it definitely has a yolk sack (pretty small, I thought, definitely smaller than a pea) that's attached to a cord.... that's still attached to a lot of the membrane. It was very lethargic for SEVERAL hours, but is trying really hard to learn to use its legs. It's still obvious it's exhausted, but that's a good sign that it's moving and chirping, right?

:-/ I'm starting to understand why my hubby didn't want me to hatch them, I've been an emotional wreck all day!
