I have a blue laced red wyandotte chick being raised with 4 siblings by my silkie hen. Today when I went to give them a little lettuce to try I noticed this chick was a bit puffed up and it had its tail pointed down. It seems healthy, it can walk and flap, vent seems clear but it just seems off. I couldn't feel any food in its crop and I don't think it's really eaten at all, when I went to give the chicks and mother some lettuce all the chicks went crazy but this one was just standing pooffy and tail down. After inspectioning it and putting it down it went under the mother hens food stand then tried to get under her. The chick didn't feel cold and it's big enough to not need it's moms warmth all the time. So I'm wondering what could be wrong with the chick and if there is anything I need to do to help it?

Hunched up.. appearing cold...my first thought...My bet is coccidiosis. I would go buy Corid. They sell a small bottle liquid. Treat them all asap. Often they don't show bloody stools right away...if it's that..they die quick...so asap is important. It will straighten them out quickly and you won't lose anymore.. this if course is if you already had dying chicks.. I realize not your case.....it's worth the $10 for the Corid to try. I could definitely be wrong...but really believe that's it.

I will try and pick some up immediately. I haven't has any chicks die yet and all the others seem perfectly fine. Is the corid a water treatment or injection? I would prefer a water treatment but if I must I could try injection. Also if it turns out that's not the problem could it hurt the chicks? Should I be worried about the mom as well, or even cross contamination to where my flock is?

From what I've been seeing, treat everyone.... I've been doing it, haven't noticed any adverse effects on anyone... But not all seem to be getting better.... Other ideas? I've also been dusting with Diatomaceous Earth (DE) but need to get them a dust bath to do themselves I guess. Mix with sand, anything else? I have them quarantined in a 54" Great Dane sized kennel in what I use as my garage. Just got them a week ago. Came sick and with mites.
