Chick running up and jumping to peck me?

My Buff Orpington chick will run over to me if I stick my hand in the brooder, jump up, fly a little bit, and peck at my elbow before just running away then trying again. Does anyone know why she might do that? I should also note they probably haven't been socialized properly, but I hate holding them when they're so scared.

She has learned that doing such gets her food. Consider what your response has been. It is a form of socialization you control and can still be adjusted.

How old are they? If you give them treats every day and talk to them they'll get tamer.....once they are friendly enough to not freak out or anything when you are near and touching them then I'd start holding them. It takes awhile, but it's worth it. Could you post a pic of your BO?
