Chick with Eye Worm?

Wait a minute! Now that I am looking at the photo magnified, it does look like a sprout.
That's not so far fetched...there are two cases of seeds sprouting in the eyes of two people. I couldn't find a photo of them, but one was documented on: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/475634

Chickens have been known to inhale a seed into the trachea, it is possible that a seed could somehow go up through the same lacrimal duct that an eye worm would travel? If it is a seed, it will sprout leaves soon. Also, if it were a worm, it would have movement of some kind.

On the other hand I was able to locate a similar case here on BYC.

Eggcessive, you worked with the OP on this one. This case was resolved.

Hopefull this mystery will be solved soon, for the sake of that poor little chicken and the keeper too. :pop

God Bless :)
I looked at that post, too. It looks very similar, but they said they were able to wipe it off. I wish this was the case!

The case in that link was dealing with a respiratory disease which eventually involves the whole flock. No, you dont want to deal with that.
What you have is a unique case with one chicken, not your whole flock.:)

To me it looks like the stringy mucous matter that develops around debris in the eye. You see it quite a lot in horses eyes although not quite as white as that and usually it breaks reasonably easily. I might be inclined to nip most of the length off and keep the eye irrigated to try to flush out any debris. My concern would be that it will cause more dirt and debris to be drawn into the eye by being external like that, especially if he is scratching it with a foot. Maybe use an antibiotic eye ointment after flushing each time. But since it is a very unusual occurrence that none of us seem to have personal experience of, an avian vet might be the best bet if you have the funds.

I thought about clipping it off, but if it is his tear duct that would be painful for the poor guy. I talked to the breeder I got him from to try to find a vet that cares for chickens in the area, but she doesn't know of anyone :(
