Chicken Breed Focus - Marans

View attachment 1399680 View attachment 1399686 I have rir, barred rocks, bo, and cuckoo marans, I ordered a male chick, I lost a dark chick in shipping, pretty sure it was one of my marans, I ordered a male marans so not sure if I have my rooster, I have one marans chick that I think is my roo but not sure. This chick is four weeks, comb is bigger than the other marans, tail feathers are just coming in and they are shaped different, had two large white dots as a chick. Can anyone tell if I have a roo or another hen?
Looks like a cockerel. Does it have yellow legs? Cuckoo Marans have white legs.

I'm hoping to get some Marans this Spring, hopefully, Black Copper
Does anyone have a preference/experience with a source for healthy true BCM's?
Any wisdom on choosing good chicks if I find a local breeder?
There's several active Marans threads, especially for BCM. Check some of the longer breeding threads and we discuss and post most if not everything you would look for in decent Marans chicks

I have 3 Cuckoo Maran Hens. They started laying late last fall and layed through the winter, but I haven't had any eggs from them for more that a week. I am beginning to wonder why. Hopefully they will start up again soon

ok. So I know I have been told and have read that you cannot sex by sight or feathers on a bcm. But look at this hatchling. I have only hatched females in the past and I could almost swear this newly hatched baby is a cockerel. Have you ever seen a comb like that at hatch? Thoughts? Opinions?

could be a girl as well.

Have been told my teen bitties are possibly marans. Hope some of you can help ID. They were ID'd at TSC as Dominique; but the older they get the more I doubt it. They are showing no sign of black and white; just getting blacker and blacker with white tips on wings and a little white on chest of one. They do have whitish faces. One has feathers on her feet as well.
