Chicken Breed Focus - Orpington

I absolutely adore my Buff Orpingtons! They are, by far, my favorite breed. Their friendly, affectionate, curious and sweet dispositions are my selling point.

I have three (Sunny, Daisy and Gracie) currently with hopes to get many more one day. Sunny is loud, curious, very soft and very friendly. Daisy is curious, friendly and very goofy. Gracie, my absolute favorite, is affectionate, sweet and every kind of friendly...towards me at least. When I reach to pet a chicken that isn't her, she runs over, gives them a swift peck on the head and jumps in my arms. She's not very fond of being held by others, so she definitely is her mama's girl. I love her to bits! I recommend Buff Orpingtons to every chicken owner looking for a hardy, friendly bird who will lay many eggs.

LMAO at Gracie!!! What a goof. Totally reminds me of the dog wanting attention. I absolutely LOVE your chickens! They're so cute!!! :celebrate

Can I get some feedback on two lavender Orpington cockerels? Give it to me straight, I can take it! :D I have four males to sort through, but let's stick to these two. They are apparently from the Hink-JC bloodline of American Orpingtons. One has barring, one is clearer. Which is more correct? What other pluses and minuses do you see in them? I can't see much Barring... Truthfully they are very cute though.

My husband picked out our BO Lulu at the feed store. She was such a laid back chick! She often dozed off in my lap.

Now that she's "grown up" she's a very attentive and gentle "mama" to our one year old son. Those two follow each other everywhere. Lu even knocked on the back door to come in to the central air to lay her first egg!

I've never been a "bird person" until that fluffy butt chirped into my life :)

Next year I hope to add a few more orpingtons to our family; definitely one or two buffs, maybe an Isabel, maybe a Mauve...I love that Silver Laced Blue...Orpingtons are my personal potato chips - I can't possibly have just one!

This is my beloved Lu:

My BO Lucii was going to be eaten by a lady, but she had too many to eat :(. So I took Lucii off her hands at about 6m old, and she was totally wild. I am so impressed with her progress, though! I got her around mid July, and she tamed down almost immediately. Squats for pets, though isnt the biggest fan. She was attacked by a racoon a few days ago and has been an absoloute sweetheart about letting me clean her surgery site and give her medications. Very impressed with this breed, though she does not do too well with the 100+ degree heat indexes

Poor baby! :( Glad she's letting you tend her wounds though.

I am so excited to get my Buff Orpingtons in a couple weeks! I have heard that folks just love them. Your story sounds like my Rhode Island Red (in my profile photo!). I was NOT a bird person and never really understood the fascination with chickens...until I started hanging out with them!
