Chicken Breed Focus - Rosecomb Bantam

Thanks for sharing your photos, you have some lovely birds!

Very pretty birds Nanakat, the blues are lovely. The eggs are a nice size for such a small bird.

Thank you...these are birds from lines bred by CJarvis. While not those he would show they are lovely in my eyes. I have some great little personalities running around the farm.

My grandfather raised and showed bantam black rosecombs most of his life. I was able to get birds from a fella who had some of his line decades after he passed. I've had them for about 8 years. A few years ago I also brought in some wheaten rosecombs from New Mexico and have been crossing them to my blacks to make some improvements.

My experience with rosecombs: They have strong natural instinct and are pretty quick minded... for a chicken. My rosecombs are more like a hive of bees than the rest of my flock. Even when hatched in separate clutches, they will always regroup as they mature to swarm with their kind. They are attentive of the rest of the group and are very reactive of each others calls and movements. My other chickens will hatch and raise rosecomb chicks, but my rosecombs will abandon juvie chicks of other breeds at very young ages. Rosecombs are the first to roost in the evening and the first to crow in the morning. They are the first to catch the bug and the first to scatter because of a hawk. The hens are extremely protective of their brood and I have witnessed them fly after a hawk and chase my emu to protect their babies. They are extremely good foragers and very hearty. My Pap never housed his. They slept in the trees in western PA and foraged their own food most of the time. He said living in the wild kept their feathers in perfect condition, kept them healthy, bright-eyed and kept them spry.

Here are some recent pics of mine.

The black rooster in the original post is mine. Wish I could post more pictures but my phone wont let me :( when I started breeding and showing my main focus was silkies and showgirls but rosecombs quickly became my favorite. They have such unique spunky personalities!
