Chicken Breed Focus - Yokohama

@hulsefam !

I read they lay between 58 and 100 eggs a year.

I also read they lay between 12 and 20 eggs, then go broody...

Does that mean the hens hatch 4 or 5 batches a year?

All the specimens in the photos here are very nice, but often you will see examples that look very poorly. Inbreeding is a big problem for this breed in America.

I've bred Phoenix before. If Yokohamas are anything like them, they are a challenge. They lay very few eggs, and they hatch much better under a hen than in an incubator. But definitely worth the challenge!

Thanks for the article!

I've tried to get some from the hatcheries. 3 times I failed to get a single one to survive even to sexing age. Love them, but I likely won't try a 4th time

So sorry to hear! That's some rotten luck. I've ordered them twice from hatcheries and had decent luck. I lost one from a batch of 6 and 2 from a batch of 15. The birds that died though weren't lost to shipping stress...they grew for a while but never thrived. I'm not used to losing birds that way.

I just love them but have questions about their markings. My hatchery birds don't have the best markings... hoping to improve them if I can.
